A study of the biosynthesis of caulerpenyne by Caulerpa taxifolia has shown that it involves only the DXP/MEP pathway (Pohnert and Jung, 2003). It was later established that the biosynthesis of all terpenes of Chlorophyceae would be conducted exclusively by this nonmevalonic acid pathway inside the chloroplasts (Schwender, Gemiinden, and Lichtenthaler, 2004). This feature makes it possible to distinguish between Chlorophyceae and Charophyceae ° and terrestrial plants that possess both biosynthesis pathways. [Pg.297]
