Cathodic protection continued resistivity-measuring

The cathodic protection of reinforcing steel and stray current protection measures assume an extended electrical continuity through the reinforcing steel. This is mostly the case with rod-reinforced concrete structures however it should be verified by resistance measurements of the reinforcing network. To accomplish this, measuring cables should be connected to the reinforcing steel after removal of the concrete at different points widely separated from each other. To avoid contact resistances, the steel must be completely cleaned of rust at the contact points. [Pg.433]

The research on corrosion, started in this institute in the 1950s, continued successfully further. The intergranular corrosion of steels was measured by an electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation method [310-312]. Since the 1960s, the passivity of brass was further studied, the rates of corrosion were measured by polarization resistance, the effect of deformation on anodic dissolution of steels was followed, and the surface roughness of metals was measured other subjects of research were, e.g., the behavior of passive films on steel, the effect of compositirai and motion of electrolyte on corrosion of passivated aluminum, the cathodic protection of passive metals against corrosion, the anodes for cathodic protection of steels, etc.[313-316]. The potential control in anodic protection installations has two functions. First, the potential must be measured and compared to a desired preset value. Second, a control signal must then be sent to the power supply to force the dc current between the cathode and vessel wall. In early systems, this control function was done in an ON-OFF method because of the high costs of electronic drcuitiy. The recent progress in power electronics has resulted in all systems having a continuous proportional-fype control. Packaging these electronic components occasionally involves special requirements because most of the installations are made in chemical plants. Explosion-proof enclosures are sometimes required, and chemically resistant enclosures are necessary in other installations. [Pg.930]
