The solvent extracts can be cleaned up by traditional column chromatography or by solid-phase extraction cartridges. This is a common cleanup method that is widely used in biological, clinical, and environmental sample preparation. More details are presented in Chapter 2. Some examples include the cleanup of pesticide residues and chlorinated hydrocarbons, the separation of nitrogen compounds from hydrocarbons, the separation of aromatic compounds from an aliphatic-aromatic mixture, and similar applications for use with fats, oils, and waxes. This approach provides efficient cleanup of steroids, esters, ketones, glycerides, alkaloids, and carbohydrates as well. Several approaches were used for the temperature control, for example, heating of the lines, pumps, valves mixing head, etc., by electrical resistance heating by means of heating cartridges and tracing lines, as well as by the recirculation of heated oil through jacketed tanks and lines. The methods used depend on the specific requirements of the application and the complexity of the machines. 

Another form of continuous application is by the nse of slightly soluble forms of solid inhibitors. The inhibitor (such as glassy phosphate or silicate in the form of a cartridge) is installed in a flow line where the inhibitor is continuously leached out by passage of fluid through the cartridge. Inhibitors in the form of sticks or pellets are used in oil and gas wells to supply inhibitor continuously by their natural slow dissolution (Fan et al. 2011).
