CARPET Subject

The foundation for this work was laid in 1989 when we adopted a low-impact Jazzercize routine of about 20 min to estimate daily exposure following the use of a flea fogger. The exercises were chosen to provide maximal surface contact between the subject and the pesticide-treated carpet (Ross et al., 1990). In the present case, two groups of volunteers performed the exercises concurrently one group wore cotton whole-body dosimeters... 

PP is now used in indoor or outdoor carpets. However, the first PP products deteriorated rapidly when subjected to sunlight because of the presence of tertiary hydrogen atoms present. Explain. Which is more resistant to attack by microorganisms (a) PVC or (b) plasticized PVC ...

The experiment was conducted in a comfortable, carpeted office, the lighting, colors, and atmosphere of which were subdued. The subject sat in an armchair about ten feet from a medium blue vase that rested on a simple brown end table the experimenter sat to one side and behind the subject, at a desk on which there were two tape recorders. It was necessary to move to a different experimental room twice during the course of the experiment, but the general atmosphere was maintained and the change did not seem to affect the phenomena reported by the subjects. 

Commercial products, used widely for the treatment of textiles, mainly apparel, soft furnishings, and carpets, are known under the trade names Scotchgard (3M), Teflon (DuPont), Asahigard (Asahi Glass), and Unidyne (Daikin). This subject is reviewed in detail in Reference 24. 

But the third man understands the goal of the project and may be able to contribute ideas on how to improve the road. The old wise Vizier replied, The third man knows what we are doing but not why it should be done. An even wiser worker would have said that the broader mission is to improve transportation of goods and people, which improves the quality of life for all our subject people. Our wisest worker would even consider whether flying carpets are better than roads to fulfill the mission. How few are those who understand the needs of the people and how to serve them ... 

Pickets of the same size were also made from a polypropylene-Nylon blend (carpet scrap)—and subjected to water submerging for a short- and long-term test. Despite a generally recognized hygroscopicity of Nylon, the pickets absorb only a little water (Table 12.10)... 

Fabrics used in the automotive industry must meet exceptionally high requirements and be subjected to nonstandard tests that simulate the high-temperature and humidity conditions of light exposure [7]. Dyed fibers cannot meet these accelerated exposure specifications, which are met by specially stabilized, pigmented polypropylene fibers. The outdoor use of polypropylene fibers is expected to grow because of improved stabilizers. It has permitted grass-substitute products to be manufactured in a variety of forms. Many of them resemble carpets, which, until 1980, were used only indoors. 

Because of the higher value of nylon resin in comparison with other polymers used in carpet, nylon carpet has been looked at as a resource for making virgin nylon via depolymerization. The majority of polyamides used commercially are nylon 6,6 or nylon 6, and the largest supply of waste for recycling of nylons is obtained from used carpets. The waste carpets are collected, sorted, and then subjected to a mechanical shredding process before depolymerization. 

Respiratory Exposure to formaldehyde occurs in certain occupational settings associated with its use as a sterilizing agent, but exposure to formaldehyde-emitting products such as particle board, urea formaldehyde insulation, carpeting, and furniture is more common. Whether non-occupational exposure to formaldehyde is related to asthma is still a subject of discussion [SEDA-32, 437]. However, it has been suggested that certain groups, specifically children, may be particularly sensitive.
