Carboxylic swelling

To illustrate the specific operations involved, the scheme below shows the first steps and the final detachment reaction of a peptide synthesis starting from the carboxyl terminal. N-Boc-glycine is attached to chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin. This polymer swells in organic solvents but is completely insoluble. ) Treatment with HCl in acetic acid removes the fert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) group as isobutene and carbon dioxide. The resulting amine hydrochloride is neutralized with triethylamine in DMF. [Pg.232]

Third Monomers. In order to achieve certain property improvements, nitrile mbber producers add a third monomer to the emulsion polymerization process. When methacrylic acid is added to the polymer stmcture, a carboxylated nitrile mbber with greatly enhanced abrasion properties is achieved (9). Carboxylated nitrile mbber carries the ASTM designation of XNBR. Cross-linking monomers, eg, divinylbenzene or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, produce precross-linked mbbers with low nerve and die swell. To avoid extraction losses of antioxidant as a result of contact with fluids duriag service, grades of NBR are available that have utilized a special third monomer that contains an antioxidant moiety (10). FiaaHy, terpolymers prepared from 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, and isoprene are also commercially available. [Pg.522]

Weakly acidic cation exchangers (e.g. polymethylacrylic acid resins). These resins (Zerolit 226, Amberlite 50, etc.) are usually supplied in the hydrogen form. They are readily changed into the sodium form by treatment with 1M sodium hydroxide an increase in volume of 80-100 per cent may be expected. The swelling is reversible and does not appear to cause any damage to the bead structure. Below a pH of about 3.5, the hydrogen form exists almost entirely in the little ionised carboxylic acid form. Exchange with metal ions will occur in solution only when these are associated in solution with anions of weak acids, i.e. pH values above about 4. [Pg.194]

One-to-one random copolymers of acrylic acid with either hydroxyethyl acrylate (a hydrogel model) or methyl acrylate failed to protect insulin from release under gastric conditions (Figure 6). In the case of the hydrogel, the expected swelling due to exposure to water occurred, releasing insulin. The behavior of the ester copolymer led to the prediction that there should be no more than about four carbon atoms per carboxylic acid group in a repeat unit of the polymers. We have not been able to disprove this hypothesis thus far. [Pg.222]

The use of phenolic polymers in photocrosslinkable systems usually involves multicomponent systems which incorporate polyfunctional low molecular weight crosslinkers. For example, Feely et al. [9] have used hydroxymethyl melamine in combination with a photoactive diazonaphthoquinone which produces an indene carboxylic acid upon irradiation to crosslink a novolac resin. Similarly, Iwayanagi et al. [10] have used photoactive bisazides in combination with poly(p-hydroxy-sty-rene) to afford a negative-tone resist material which does not swell upon development in aqueous base. [Pg.75]

Question 4. Why is the preliquefied insoluble product so easily liquefied The most probable answer. The preliquefaction product with the reduced carboxyl groups content is more easily liquefied than the parent coal. Based on the product distribution, solvent swelling data and the model simulation, this improvement results from a reduction in the CO2 associated crosslinks and from the bond breaking which produces the chloroform solubles. Both effects reduce the total number of bonds linking the network so that the coal can become fluid. If the chloroform soluble fraction is removed after preliquefaction and the residue liquefied, the drastic improvement in the liquefaction is not observed. The model simulation confirms that the residue alone will liquefy slightly better than the parent coal, but not nearly as well as the mixture. [Pg.210]
