The carbon monoxide molecule can be described in conventional valence bond terms as having two canonical forms one having the carbene-like structure in which divalent carbon is linked to oxygen by a double bond and the other a dinitrogen-like form, in which both atoms carry a lone pair and are linked by a triple bond [Eq (2.1)]. [Pg.36]

Structures [VI] and [VII], respectively, are said to arise from head-to-tail or head-to-head orientations. Fibers. The principal type of phenoHc fiber is the novoloid fiber (98). The term novoloid designates a content of at least 85 wt % of a cross-linked novolak. Novoloid fibers are made by acid-cataly2ed cross-linking of melt-spun novolak resin to form a fuUy cross-linked amorphous network. The fibers are infusible and insoluble, and possess physical and chemical properties that distinguish them from other fibers.
