Oxygen reaction with carbon

In this chapter, the theoretical background and different molecular simulation methods are introduced with stress on electronic structme methods, followed by a comprehensive review of studies on gas-carbon reactions using MS in the last four decades, which include the hydrogen-carbon reactions, carbon reactions with oxygen-containing gases, and metal-carbon interaction. [Pg.93]

In the past five decades there has been a large volume of literature in the study of carbon reactions with oxygen-containing gases, and the central issue is the determination of the active sites on carbon so that the kinetics of carbon can be correlated for different forms of carbon based on the active sites existing on these carbons. Since the groundbreaking work of Laine, Vastola, and Walker [7], this area has been somewhat dormant until recently, when further advances have been made [4-6,8,9,73-76]. [Pg.106]

The use of a catalyst such as cadmium oxide increases the yield of dibasic acids to about 51% of theoretical. The composition of the mixed acids is about 75% C-11 and 25% C-12 dibasic acids (73). Reaction of undecylenic acid with carbon monoxide using a triphenylphosphine—rhodium complex as catalyst gives 11-formylundecanoic acid, which, upon reaction with oxygen in the presence of Co(II) salts, gives 1,12-dodecanedioic acid in 70% yield (74). [Pg.63]

Reaction with oxygen occurs during combustion in an engine or furnace when the alkane is used as a fuel. Carbon dioxide and water are formed as products, and a large amount of heat is released. For example, methane (natural gas) reacts with oxygen according to the equation... [Pg.91]

H.15 Write a balanced equation for the complete combustion (reaction with oxygen) of liquid heptane, C7H)6, a component typical of the hydrocarbons in gasoline, to carbon dioxide gas and water vapor. [Pg.89]

A small fraction (less than 1%) of the fixed carbon produced by photosynthesis is buried and physically removed from any potential reaction with oxygen (until the buried material is brought to the surface - at a much later time). Thus, the oxygen in our contemporary atmosphere is the consequence of many millions of years of fixed carbon burial. More details on this topic can be found in Chapters 8 and 11. [Pg.102]

It is pointed out by these authors that the reaction of carbon atoms with oxygen atoms is very fast and quantitative. It appeared, then, that in all cases the final step was the addition of a carbonyl group to... [Pg.78]

Gas phase thermal cracking of the volatiles occurs, reducing the levels of tar. Char (fixed carbon) and ash are the pyrolysis byproducts that are not vaporized. In the second step, the char is gasified through reactions with oxygen, steam, and hydrogen. Some of the unbumed char may be combusted to release the heat needed for the endothermic pyrolysis reactions. [Pg.135]

Carbon dioxide can be formed by the reaction of oxygen with carbon to form carbon monoxide, followed by the reaction of carbon monoxide with oxygen. Carbon dioxide can also be formed directly from carbon and oxygen. No matter which pathway is used, the enthalpy change of the reaction is the same. [Pg.243]

Irradiation of diazo 21d in carbon tetrachloride gave, in addition to 72 (R = Me) and 73, the 3-chloro-3-trichloromethyl-l-methyloxindole (76a) (64JOC3577). Since the photolysis in carbon tetrachloride under comparable conditions produces, in the primary step, CCI3 radicals and chlorine atoms (63JOC3442), in the formation of 76a and probably in the reaction with oxygen to give 74, the carbene 71 shows biradical properties in the... [Pg.96]
