Carbon dioxide enrichment

Soda-lime, after absorbing hydrogen sulfide, exhibits a considerable exotherm (100°C) when exposed simultaneously to moisture and air, particularly with carbon dioxide enrichment, and has caused fires in laboratory waste bins containing moist paper wipes. Saturation with water and separate disposal in sealed containers is recommended. 

In the presence of organic substrates may be caused by simple carbon dioxide enrichment from Increased bacterial respiration (37, 38)>... 

Yentsch (39) found that extracts from Ascophyllum stimulated bacterial respiration. In the present study, such carbon dioxide enrichment cannot account for the increased growth rates in axenlc cultures supplemented with soil extract.

In order to reach a diagnosis, it is necessary to select the examination method which is most suitable for the detection of the respective pathogen. When applying suitable bacteriological techniques, anaerobes can be found in 30-40% of cases. Solitary liver abscesses (63%) displayed a polymicrobial pathogenic spectrum in twice as many cases as did multiple abscesses (30%). (13) Streptococcus milleri is a very common cause. Carbon dioxide-enriched atmospheres (10-20% CO2 in air) are used to extend the postharvest life of strawberries [162]. However, some adverse effects on colour, mainly a reduction in the intensity of red of the internal tissue, have been reported. Changes in strawberry anthocyanins and other polyphenols in response to carbon dioxide treatments have been studied [36]. The external and internal anthocyanin contents were significantly different in fruit stored in air compared with the initial values or with those of fruit stored under CO2 enriched atmosphere. No differences in the external anthocyanin content between fruit stored under C02-enriched atmospheres and freshly picked fruit were observed. Aeration of suspension cultures grown in bioreactors needs to be optimized with respect to dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. High aeration rates may lead to excessive (toxic) concentrations of dissolved oxygen, increased shear forces, and subcritical levels of key volatiles such as gaseous hormones (ethylene) and carbon dioxide (62). Carbon dioxide enrichment of the aeration mixture increased biomass yields 63,64). Van Gulik (65) has recently reviewed this subject in detail.
