Carbon dioxide cycle units

Alternatives to fossil fuels, such as hydrogen, are explored in Box 6.2 and Section 14.3. Coal, which is mostly carbon, can be converted into fuels with a lower proportion of carbon. Its conversion into methane, CH4, for instance, would reduce C02 emissions per unit of energy. We can also work with nature by accelerating the uptake of carbon by the natural processes of the carbon cycle. For example, one proposed solution is to pump C02 exhaust deep into the ocean, where it would dissolve to form carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions. Carbon dioxide can also be removed from power plant exhaust gases by passing the exhaust through an aqueous slurry of calcium silicate to produce harmless solid products ... [Pg.731]

Acetogenins. Acetogenins are produced upon chain elongation with activated acetate units (or malonate followed by loss of carbon dioxide). A simplified sketch of this sequence is given in Fig. 1. During the first steps, a Claisen-type condensation of two acyl precursors yields a (3-ketoacyl intermediate A. Upon reduction to B and dehydration to C, followed by hydrogenation to D and hydrolysis, the chain elongated fatty acid E is produced. The next cycle will add another two carbons to the chain. Similarly, a reversed sequence leads to chain... [Pg.102]

To complete the oxidation of fatty acids the acetyl units of acetyl-CoA generated in the P oxidation sequence must be oxidized to carbon dioxide and water.77 The citric acid (or tricarboxylic acid) cycle by which this oxidation is accomplished is a vital part of the metabolism of almost all aerobic creatures. It occupies a central position in metabolism because of the fact that acetyl-CoA is also an intermediate in the catabolism of carbohydrates and of many amino acids and other compounds. The cycle is depicted in detail in Fig. 10-6 and in an abbreviated form, but with more context, in Fig. 17-4. [Pg.950]

The triple-point crystallization of carbon dioxide is illustrated in Figure 7, which shows a schematic carbon dioxide phase diagram expanded about the triple-point and a closed-cycle triple-point crystallizer operating with pure carbon dioxide. The operation of this closed-cycle unit is identical to that of a unit in the stripping section of a continous crystallizer cascade, except that in the cascade vapor would pass to the unit above, and liquid would pass to the unit below. [Pg.45]

On the whole, when synthesizing a global model of the C02 biogeochemical cycle, the unit to simulate that part of the cycle spent in the ocean must describe how the ocean carbonate system works. Alekseev et al. (1992), analyzing the system C02 IICO, COj and the distribution of pH values in ocean waters, discovered that more than 80% of dissolved carbon dioxide is in the form of hydrocarbonate ion of HC03. This means that when synthesizing a model of the ocean carbonate system only the first stage of the dissociation of carbonic acid can be reliably considered. As a result, the flux of C02 dissolved in the upper layer of the ocean can be calculated by the formula... [Pg.168]

By the above steps of p-oxidation fatty acids are completely degraded to acetyl CoA units. The acetyl CoA formed from fatty acids can be oxidised to carbon dioxide and water via citric acid cycle. [Pg.349]

From a mechanistic point of view the first steps of the catalytic cycle should be similar to the telomerization of butadiene itself (Scheme 2). The catalytic precursor generates the Pd(0) species A that reacts to the bis-(ri -allyl) complex C. The C,C bond formation between two C4 units is followed by insertion of carbon dioxide into a Pd,C bond affording the carboxylate intermediate D. Different pathways have been discussed to describe the multiple product formation (refer to ). Interestingly, a bis-(carboxylato) complex may be prepared directly from the reaction of lactone 1, palladium acetate and P(i-Pr)3. This complex was structurally characterized by Behr and co-workers and shows good activity as catalyst. Reviewing the literature, there are some remarkable facts and open questions of theoretical and technical interest ... [Pg.129]

Acetylcoenzyme A supplies the main fuel for the tricarboxylic acid cycle (see Fig. 5), which is the principal route by which carbohydrate is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. The effect of one turn of the cycle is the simple oxidation of a molecular unit of acetate. [Pg.163]
