As with the other protein-based CSPs, initial studies indicate a relationship between the structure of the protein and chromatographic properties of the OVM CSP (101). When the sialic acid residues, were enzymatically removed from the protein, the capadty factors (k ) of the enantiomers of an addic solute (ketoprofen) were reduced, whereas the k s of the enantiomers of a basic solute (chlorpheniramine) were un-... [Pg.171]

Presume that a yield of 20 g F1 of L-phenylalanine can be obtained. This is more realistic, based on patent literature, than the low yields in the example considered previously (section 8.6). This automatically means that more glucose will be needed. Let us again presume that instead of 35 g P glucose we now need 150 g l 1 to achieve this overall yield. The concentrations of the mineral salt are kept fire same to maintain good buffering capadty, whilst the concentration of tyrosine and tryptophan are also increased by a factor 4.3 (tyrosine 0.21 g F1 and tryptophan 0.11 g F1)... [Pg.258]

Example S Estimation of fixed-capital investment with power factor applied to plant-capadty ratio. If the process plant, described in Example 1, was erected in the Dallas area for a fixed-capital investment of 436,000 in 1975, determine what the estimated fixed-capital investment would have been in 1980 for a similar process plant located near Los Angeles with twice the process capacity but with an equal number of process units Use the power-factor method to evaluate the new fixed-capital investment and assume the factors given in Table 20 apply. [Pg.189]

Typical units for productivity are kg m h. Factors that influence productivity include the production time of the fermentation, the time required to dean and set up the reactor, the sterilisation time and the length of the lag phase of growth. Hgure 2.2 shows how total productivity and maximal productivity can be calculated for a batch fermentation. The dedsion as to when the fermentation is terminated (maximum or total productivity) depends on the operating costs, which include the capadty of the fermentation vessel, energy costs and labour costs. [Pg.20]

In part, the increase in yield could be attributed to the capadty erf the CSL to buffer the pH and to fadlitate tive slow release of carbohydrate. However, by far the most important factor was flrat CSL provided a precursor tfiat led to the production of a more stable and easier to isolate form of penicillin, what we now call penicillin G. [Pg.157]

This relationship is known as the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation and it shows that the pH will be equal to the pKa when the ratio of conjugate base to acid is unity, since the final term will be zero. Consequently, the pKa of a buffer solution is an important factor in determining the buffer capadty at a particular pH. In practical terms, this means that a buffer solution will work most effectively at pH values about one unit either side of the pKa. [Pg.58]

Successful fradure acidizing treatments do not depend solely on good fluid-loss properties (30). Adequate fracture flow capadty must be established by the add system used. The quantity of rock removed and the pattern in which it is removed from the fracture face are important. Fracture flow capadty is dependent on the nature of the rock and the characteristics of the add, such as add type, volume, and concentration. Other factors that lead to increased fracture flow conductivity include foam quality and pumping rate. As long as the foam is stable, foamed add of any quality increases the fracture flow conductivity when compared with non-foamed adds. As well, increases in total treatment pumping rates achieve better fracture conductivities because of greater acidized fradure lengths. [Pg.377]

Buffer capadty is a measure of the strength or quahty of a buffer. It is defined as the reciprocal value of the slope of the pH curve (or titration curve) of the buffer [6]. It depends on two factors (1) the concentration of the buffer (2) the distance between the pH and the pK of the buffer. In Fig. 3, we show the buffer capacities of acetate buffers at concentrations of 5 mM, 10 mM, 20 mM, and 40 mM. The maximum of the buffer capacity is always at the plQ, i.e. 4.75 for the acetate buffer. The maximum buffer capacity increases in direct proportion to the buffer concentration. At the same time, the pH range over which a particular buffer capacity is achieved increases with increasing concentration. For example, a 10 mM acetate buffer has a buffer capacity in excess of0.005 in the pH range from... [Pg.77]

A represents the square root of the mass ratio per backbone atom of the pol3uner to that of a CHj-group. B represents the ratio of of the polymer to 0 of polyethylene. The inverse proporticmaliiy of the 01-temperatures to the square roots of masses can be taken as an indication that the change in mass from one polymer to the other is the main factor determining the box distribution part of the Tarasov treatment. 01 governs the heat capacities from about 50° K. As a result it should be possible to estimate unknown] lattice contributions, C, to the heat capadty of solid polymers above 50° K by ... [Pg.351]
