Calcium metaborate

The so-called metaborates of empirical formula B02 can take several forms. The infinite linear (B02) T ion is found in the low-temperature form of LiB02 (449), Ca(B02)2 (275), and Sr(B02)2 (46). At high temperatures and pressures, the lithium compound possesses a sphaleritelike structure with boron in four-coordination (278). The triborate isolated B3Or group is found in the barium (297), sodium (276), and potassium (361) compounds, and the framework B30 " group, in which all the boron atoms are tetrahedral, exists for a high-pressure calcium metaborate phase (280) and copper metaborate (284). Two other anhydrous calcium metaborates are known to give the series... 

Calcium metaborate is claimed to be advantageously incorporated into frits as fire retardants in fire doors particularly for those based on sodium silicate. It is believed that calcium borosilicate will be formed upon heating in these compositions.40...

The bands in the 92% B compounds are also located. Data on the sodium and calcium salts, as representative of the ring and chain metaborate structures, are in agreement with results reported by Goubeau and Hummel (6). The spectra given by Wier and Schroeder (20) are more complex and may not represent pure phases.

As a soluble calcium salt, calcium metaborate can be easily and uniformly dispersed in nickel electrodes. The effects of calcium metaborate on the nickel electrode have been investigated via a combination of cyclabihty, capacity retention, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction.
