Calcium characteristics

X-ray fluorescence A method of analysis used to identify and measure heavy elements in the presence of each other in any matrix. The sample is irradiated with a beam of primary X-rays of greater energy than the characteristic X-radiation of the elements in the sample. This results in the excitation of the heavy elements present and the emission of characteristic X-ray energies, which can be separated into individual wavelengths and measured. The technique is not suitable for use with elements of lower atomic number than calcium. [Pg.429]

Calcium, strontium and barium produce characteristic flame colours like the Group 1 cations (calcium, orange strontium, red barium, green) and flame photometry can be used for their estimation. All give insoluble carbonates in neutral solution. [Pg.136]

Fillers (qv) are occasionally used in flexible slab foams the two most commonly used are calcium carbonate (whiting) and barium sulfate (barytes). Their use level may range up to 150 parts per 100 parts of polyol. Various other ingredients may also be used to modify a flexible foam formulation. Cross-linkers, chain extenders, ignition modifiers, auxiHary blowing agents, etc, are all used to some extent depending on the final product characteristics desired. [Pg.417]

Cascara sagrada is used as a cathartic. It is most useful when prepared as a fluid extract, and tends to be a mild laxative causing Htfle discomfort. However, on prolonged use it may result in characteristic melanotic pigmentation of the rectal mucosa. The bitter taste can be lessened, owing to neutralization of the acid constituents, if the ground substance is moistened and mixed with magnesium or calcium hydroxide. This treatment may lessen the potency of the preparation. [Pg.201]

Docusate Calcium. Dioctyl calcium sulfosuccinate [128-49-4] (calcium salt of l,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)ester butanedioic acid) (11) is a white amorphous soHd having the characteristic odor of octyl alcohol. It is very slightly soluble in water, and very soluble in alcohol, polyethylene glycol 400, and com oil. It may be prepared directly from dioctyl sodium sulfo succinate dissolved in 2-propanol, by reaction with a methan olic solution of calcium chloride. [Pg.201]

Nonblack fillers such as the precipitated siHcas can reduce both rate and state of cure. The mechanism appears to be one of a competitive reaction between mbber and filler for the zinc oxide activator. Use of materials such as diethylene glycol or triethanolamine prevents this competition thereby maintaining the desired cure characteristics. Neutral fillers such as calcium carbonate (whiting) and clays have Httie or no effect on the cure properties. [Pg.242]

Calcium—zinc stabilizers are used in both plasticized PVC and rigid PVC for food contact where it is desired to minimize taste and odor characteristics. AppHcations include meat wrap, water botdes, and medical uses. [Pg.503]

SoHd lubricants ate added to help control high friction characteristics in high speed or heavy-duty appHcations where high temperatures are generated. Molybdenum disulfide [1317-33-5] M0S2, may be used alone or in a complex compound formed by grinding with fine natural graphite, and zinc sulfide [1314-98-3] ZnS. Other compounds include calcium fluoride, cryoHte [15096-52-3] Na AlF, rare-earth oxides, and metal sulfides, eg, iron, antimony, or zinc (see LUBRICATION AND LUBRICANTS). [Pg.274]

It is also made by precipitation from dissolved calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide. The natural ground calcium carbonate and the precipitated material compete industrially based primarily on particle size and the characteristics imparted to a product. [Pg.410]

The use of calcium carbonate in thermosets continues to grow as these plastics replace alternative materials, especially in automotive appHcations. Increased loadings of calcium carbonate in thermosets reduce cost and provide better surface characteristics. [Pg.411]

Food. Food-grade calcium chloride is used in cheese making to aid in rennet coagulation and to replace calcium lost in pasteurization. In the canning iadustry it is used to firm the skin of fmit such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and jalapenos. It acts as a control in many flocculation, coagulation systems (37). Food-grade calcium chloride is used in the brewing iadustry both to control the mineral salt characteristics of the water and as a basic component of certain beers (see Beer). [Pg.416]

Ash fusion characteristics are important in ash deposition in boilers. Ash deposition occurring on the furnace walls is termed slagging, whereas accumulation on the superheater and other tubes is termed fouling. A variety of empirical indexes have been developed (60,61) to relate fouling and slagging to the ash chemical composition through parameters such as acidic and basic oxides content, sodium, calcium and magnesium, and sulfur. [Pg.223]
