Lipids may also be involved in the calcification of the dentine matrix, because sudanophilic materials have been detected in ontoblasts, at the dentine-predentine junction and in the peritubular dentine matrix311. A series of nutritional studies have shown that dentine lipids are in a dynamic state312-315. A diet deficient in essential fatty acids produced degenerative effects on dentinogenesis and resulted in the production of teeth more susceptible to dental caries315. ... [Pg.68]

The heart may be enlarged with left ventricular hypertrophy, particularly in cases which have exhibited hypertension during life. Metastatic calcification of the valves and of the myocardium may be present, explaining no doubt the cardiac murmurs which may have been detected clinically in such cases. Occasionally, medullary proliferation of large arteries and, in the smaller arteries, fragmentation of the intimal elastic lamina has been reported, in one case with impregnation with calcium salts. Local calcification of the media of the middle cerebral artery has been described. [Pg.173]

Pentastomum denticulatum is the final larva of the nasal worm Linguatula serrata. The adult parasites (4-5 mm long) live in the nasal cavities and respiratory tracts of carnivorous animals and snakes. Infection is transmitted through oral ingestion of the eggs with subsequent development of the larvae in the small intestine. They travel via the portal vein to the liver, where they encyst and form hard, yellow nodules of ca. 3 mm in diameter. Histology reveals fibrous alterations as well as granulomatous infiltrates fine calcifications can occasionally be detected. No therapy is known. [Pg.494]

To date, there has only been one single observation of a chondroma. (124) This tumour was excessively large (19 X 15 X 9.5 cm) it was hypervascularized, had a multilobular structure and did not possess a capsule. Focal calcifications were detectable. Chondrocyte-like cells and a chondroid matrix were found. Such a tumour can be visualized by imaging procedures. Laparoscopically, a hard, nodular surface is detectable. Diagnosis can only be confirmed histologically. [Pg.760]

To acquire better structural information, one has to resort to more advanced solid-state NMR techniques. Here, they will be reviewed by subject rather than in chronological order. First, we shall briefly look at P relaxation. Second, components of the H—> P CP signal will be discussed. Third, much attention will be given to HPO detection by differential H—> P cross-polarization (DCP). Then the P sideband pattern index and chemical shift anisotropy in the study of bone calcification will be briefly reviewed. Finally, a special ADRF-CP technique will be mentioned. [Pg.248]

X-ray examination still plays some role especially in the acute phase (heart enlargement and pulmonary oedema) and in the detection of aneurysms and calcifications, visualisation of heart valves, pacemakers, etc. [Pg.8]

Derangements in mineral metabolism frequently lead to metastatic calcification of soft tissue. Bone-seeking radionuclides, such as "Relabeled phosphate preparations, are proving particularly useful in detecting extra-skeletal calcification in situations where roentgenographic demonstration is lacking.61... [Pg.227]
