Back cohosh, a herb reported to be beneficial in managing symptoms of menopause, is generally regarded as safe when used as directed. Back cohosh is a member of the buttercup flower family. The dosage of standardized extract is 2 tablets twice a day, or 40 dropsof standardized tincture twice a day or one 500- to 600-mg tablet or capsule three times daily. The bufadienolides occur in plants as well as animals, but only in plants are they in the form of glycosides. Their 3-hydroxyl group is attached lo glucose, rhamnose, or thevetosc. Hellebrigenin (Fig. 2). which is also known as bufotalidin. occurs in the rhizomes of the Christmas rose and other Helleborus species in the form of a rhamnoside. Bufadienolides have so far been found in plants in only two families, the buttercup and the lily family.

Primarily a north temperate family, the Raminculaceae is familiar to us as the family of buttercups and other weeds.

FILL AND FROST THE CAKE with cream cheese frosting and let chill. Tint l/2 cup frosting lemon yellow, and use the IO tip to pipe 5 dots in a circle to create simple buttercup flowers. Then combine any remaining yellow frosting with some additional cream cheese frosting and tint it leaf green. I use tip 67> which pipes small fern stems. Pipe the center stamen with cream cheese frosting and chill to set.
