Christmas rose

The bufadienolides occur in plants as well as animals, but only in plants are they in the form of glycosides. Their 3-hydroxyl group is attached lo glucose, rhamnose, or thevetosc. Hellebrigenin (Fig. 2). which is also known as bufotalidin. occurs in the rhizomes of the Christmas rose and other Helleborus species in the form of a rhamnoside. Bufadienolides have so far been found in plants in only two families, the buttercup and the lily family. [Pg.735]

Hellebores flower in winter and early spring, earning names such as Christmas rose i Helleborus niger) or Lenten rose (H. orientalis). Most have green, creamy white, or dull purple blooms, carried over low evergreen foliage. [Pg.115]

CHRISTMAS ROSE Helleborus ni er, L., Family Ranunculaceae, is cultivated in gardens. The whole plant is toxic. Especially in the root there are cardiac glycosides, which are very stable. They are not degraded by drying or storage. The symptoms are the same as for Foxglove. [Pg.142]
