Burnet

Burnet is stated to possess astringent, antihemorrhagic, styptic, and antihemorrhoidal properties. It has been used for ulcerative colitis, metorrhagia, and specifically for acute diarrhea. [Pg.88]

Calamus has been used for centuries to treat gastrointestinal distress, including colic in children, and as a sedative. A rhizome infusion is used to treat fevers and dyspepsia, and chewing the rhizome is recommended to clear the voice, relieve dyspepsia, aid digestion, and remove tobacco odor from the breath. The powdered rhizome is used as a cooking spice, as is calamus oil, which is responsible for the plant s odor and taste. In the U.S., calamus was once used to flavor tooth powders, beer, bitters, and various tonics, although it is no longer used today. [Pg.88]

Calamus acts as a carminative, spasmolytic, and diaphoretic. Traditionally, it has been prescribed for acute and chronic dyspepsia, gastritis and gastric ulcer, intestinal colic, and anorexia. [Pg.88]

Calendula is stated to possess antispasmodic, mild diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, antihemorrhagic, emmenagogue, vulnerary, styptic, and antiseptic properties. Traditionally, it has been used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and epistaxis crural ulcers, varicose veins, [Pg.88]

Capsicum has stimulant, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, counterirritant, antiseptic, and rubefacient properties. Traditionally, it has been used for colic, flatulent dyspepsia without inflammation, chronic laryngitis (as a gargle), insufficiency of peripheral circulation, and externally for neuralgia, including rheumatic pains and unbroken chilblains. [Pg.89]

It had been known since 1941 that red blood-cells are agglutinated by fluids containing influenza virus. In 1942, G. K. Hirst proved that purified influenza virus is quickly and quantitatively adsorbed on red cells, but that, after the elapse of several hours, the virus particle, apparently intact, has come off the surface of the red cells. After this treatment, cells were unable to be agglutinated by influenza virus or to adsorb virus particles. The problem of the interaction of influenza virus with red cells was attacked in a comprehensive manner by Sir Macfarlane Burnet and his coworkers in Melbourne in the period of... [Pg.5]

Dialogue on Transmutation is just that, a dialogue. In it Boyle never says that he witnessed the foreigner s projection. However, the same incident is described in notes taken by Boyle s confidant, Bishop Gilbert Burnet, when Boyle told him of the incident. And Boyle refers to the incident himself in his book Producibleness of Chymical Principles. Here he referred to the operation carried out by the foreigner only as a Metalline experiment, not as a projection. However, the details that he recounted were the same as those in the Dialogue. [Pg.61]

A key feature of the clonal selection theory is that each antibody-forming cell or clone is committed to the expression of one antibody. The diversity in the response is a consequence of the great variety of distinct clones. Initially, Burnet (1957) assumed that antibody diversification occurs exclusively early in life, by a random... [Pg.41]
