Brown, Harrison

It was not until the mid-1960s that Harrison Brown (later ICSU President) called attention to the absence of any successor to the International Critical Tables, and was asked by ICSU to make recommendations. This led to ICSU s creation of CODATA, following on from ICSU s earlier World Data Centers, devoted to specific sciences such as metereology. This body is more of a gadfly and organiser... [Pg.492]

Harrison Brown understood enough about the geochemistry of uranium and meteorites to realize that the lead in iron meteorites should be primordial, unchanged since the solar system formed. So he went looking for a student familiar enough with mass spectroscopy to analyze the isotopes in the lead in ancient iron meteorites and in modern rocks. He found Patterson. [Pg.170]

To fund Patterson s project, Harrison Brown convinced the American Petroleum Institute that information about ocean sediments would help locate oil. Harrison got money from them every year, huge amounts, to fund the operation of my laboratory, which had nothing whatsoever to do with oil in any way, shape, or form, Patterson recalled. To me it was just a falsehood. .. a fib. But Brown continued to get Patterson the money he needed for several years. [Pg.174]

These species are ubiquitous in soil (Kelly and Harrison 1989). In a recent laboratory investigation of the fate of ionic thiocyanate in six different soils, Brown and Morra (1993) concluded that microbial degradation is the primary mechanism for thiocyanate disappearance at or below 30 °C, with carbonyl sulfide proposed as a possible hydrolysis product. Loss of thiocyanate at higher temperatures (50-60 °C) did not appear to result from microbial degradation the observed decreases in thiocyanate concentrations of soil extracts with incubation time at elevated temperatures were postulated to result primarily from increased sorption or increased sorption kinetics, but abiotic catalysis of thiocyanate degradation was also noted as a possible cause. [Pg.173]
