Breeding bulk method

Mass selection in a heterogenous population that is undergoing inbreeding (self-pollination) is one of the oldest methods of breeding. Some breeders consider mass selection a variation of the bulk method only in the case of mass selection, the breeder... [Pg.62]

The number of cows represented in each bulk milk sample, location, altitude and breed reared for each farm are reported in Table 1. Bulk milk samples were collected at each farm. A total of 618 samples from four farms (twice from each 78 Jersey 125 Holstein 59 Holstein and 47 cross breeds, respectively) were collected according to the Colorado Public Health and Environment milk sampling and testing manual 2000 and the International Dairy Federation (IDF) standard methods of sampling for bulk milk (tankers, silos, etc.). As recommended in these manuals, in the case of small retail samples, the whole container represents the sample, but must not be less than 100 ml. The sample characteristics of cows whole milk are described in Table 1. [Pg.92]

Seed size may be an important characteristic especially for special purpose or food-type cultivars. One can select especially large or small seed size for using methods like mass selection or bulk breeding. The inheritance for seed size is quantitative, but selecting for extremes in populations can result in many lines with the targeted seed size. [Pg.56]
