The role of fatty acids as oxidizable fuels for brain metabolism is negligible, but ketone bodies, derived from fatty acid oxidation, can be utilized, particularly in the neonatal period. Diseases of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism may affect the brain directly or indirectly [1,10].

Thus, the effects of DHA supplementation on the brain depend not only on the relative levels of n-3 and n-6 FA in the diet but also on individual differences in terms of fatty acid metabolism. 

Thus a comparison was made between the fatty acids of newborn brain following 40 minutes of anoxia and those of adult mouse brain after 3 minutes of ischemia. This time period of complete circulatory arrest prevents total recovery of CNS functions. Though there are obvious differences between the action of anoxia and ischemia on brain metabolism in general, we found similar changes in the newborn brain fatty acids during anoxia under nitrogen and in previously published data using postdecapitation ischemia (Bazan et al., 1971 Bazan, 1971). 

Fatty Acid Synthesis. In human fatty acids synthesis is highly active in liver, mammary glands and brain. Fatty acid biosynthesis occurs in the cytosol through a series of reactions where acetyl-CoA (synthesized from pyruvate, the end product of glucose metabolism) and Malonyl-CoA are linked to form palmitoyl-CoA. During this elongation process, NADPH supplies electrons to Malonyl-CoA [20, 23].
