The main acute effect is inebriation, which in turn spawns violence, spousal and child abuse, crime, motor vehicle accidents, workplace and home accidents, drowning, suicide, and accidental death. The chronic effects include alcoholism, liver disease, various forms of cancer, brain disorders, cardiovascular disease and other organ system effects, absence from or loss of work, family dysfunction, and malnutrition.

In addition to age, prior brain damage probably increases the risk of TD (Breggin, 1983b Chouinard et ah, 1979 McKeith et ah, 1992). Cohen and Cohen (1993) found a correlation between TD and prior organic brain disorder.

Since the distribution of defective mtDNA may vary from organ to organ, a mutation that in one person would cause liver disease might in another cause a brain disorder. In most of these disorders, white matter damage is patchy, and the basal ganglia are not affected. Treatments to protect the brain are few. In some disorders enzyme replacement and substrate reduction are possible, but the efficacy in the brain, an organ protected by the blood-brain barrier, is often poor.
