Boron precision

Electronic-Grade MMCs. Metal-matrix composites can be tailored to have optimal thermal and physical properties to meet requirements of electronic packaging systems, eg, cotes, substrates, carriers, and housings. A controUed thermal expansion space tmss, ie, one having a high precision dimensional tolerance in space environment, was developed from a carbon fiber (pitch-based)/Al composite. Continuous boron fiber-reinforced aluminum composites made by diffusion bonding have been used as heat sinks in chip carrier multilayer boards. [Pg.204]

Abundances of lUPAC (the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). Their most recent recommendations are tabulated on the inside front fly sheet. From this it is clear that there is still a wide variation in the reliability of the data. The most accurately quoted value is that for fluorine which is known to better than I part in 38 million the least accurate is for boron (1 part in 1500, i.e. 7 parts in [O ). Apart from boron all values are reliable to better than 5 parts in [O and the majority arc reliable to better than I part in 10. For some elements (such as boron) the rather large uncertainty arises not because of experimental error, since the use of mass-spcctrometric measurements has yielded results of very high precision, but because the natural variation in the relative abundance of the 2 isotopes °B and "B results in a range of values of at least 0.003 about the quoted value of 10.811. By contrast, there is no known variation in isotopic abundances for elements such as selenium and osmium, but calibrated mass-spcctrometric data are not available, and the existence of 6 and 7 stable isotopes respectively for these elements makes high precision difficult to obtain they are thus prime candidates for improvement. [Pg.17]

Boron has 2 stable naturally occurring isotopes and the variability of their concentration (particularly the difference between borates from California (low in °B) and Turkey (high in °B) prevents the atomic weight of boron being quoted more precisely than 10.811(7) (p. 17). Each isotope has a nuclear spin (Table 6.1) and this has proved particularly valuable in nmr spectroscopy, especially for The great... [Pg.144]

The determination of precise physical properties for elemental boron is bedevilled by the twin difficulties of complex polymorphism and contamination by irremovable impurities. Boron is an extremely hard refractory solid of high mp, low density and very low electrical conductivity. Crystalline forms are dark red in transmitted light and powdered forms are black. The most stable ()3-rhombohedral) modification has mp 2092°C (exceeded only by C among the non-metals), bp 4000°C, d 2.35 gcm (a-rhombohedral form 2.45gcm ), A77sublimation 570kJ per mol of B, electrical conductivity at room temperature 1.5 x 10 ohm cm- . [Pg.144]

The atomic properties of the Group 13 elements (including boron) are compared in Table 7.4. All have odd atomic numbers and correspondingly few stable isotopes. The varying precision of... [Pg.222]

The discovery of polyhedral boranes and polyhedral heteroboranes, which contain at least one atom other than in the cage, initiated a new era in boron chemistry.1-4 Most commonly, of the three commercially available isomeric dicarba-closo-dodecaborane carboranes(l,2-, 1,7-, and 1,12-), the 1,2-isomer 1 has been used for functionalization and connection to organic molecules. The highly delocalized three-dimensional cage bonding that characterizes these carboranes provides extensive thermal and kinetic stabilization as well as photochemical stability in the ultraviolet and visible regions. The unusual icosahedral geometry of these species provides precise directional control of all exopolyhedral bonds. [Pg.61]

Precise placement of metal complexing sites within the infrastructure of a cascade molecule is of importance from a variety of perspectives. In the construction of the above noted Micellane family (cf. Sect. 3.1), we reported the construction of dendrimers with four alkyne moieties at sites equidistant from each other in the interior (17, Fig. 8) [60]. These were treated with decaborane (B10H14) to afford 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaboranes (o-carboranes) [71]. Rendering boron clusters soluble in water is of interest because of their use in cancer treatment by Boron Neutron Cancer Therapy. First and second generation water-soluble dendrimers containing four and twelve precisely located boron cluster sites, respectively, were synthesized (e.g., 18). These water soluble dendrimers and their precursors were characterized by 13C-, and nB-NMR spectroscopy (Fig. 8). [Pg.41]

Cossy and coworkers described a precise combination of a Heck and a Suzuki-Miyama reaction using ynamides and boronic acids to give indole and 7-azaindole derivatives [46]. Thus, reaction of 6/1-73 with 6/1-74 using Pd(OAc)2 as catalyst led to 6/1-75 in 68% yield (Scheme 6/1.18). [Pg.371]

Couto et al. [11] developed a flow injection system with potentiometric detection for determination of TC, OTC, and CTC in pharmaceutical products. A homogeneous crystalline CuS/Ag2S double membrane tubular electrode was used to monitor the Cu(II) decrease due to its complexation with OTC. The system allows OTC determination within a 49.1 1.9 x 103 ppm and a precision better than 0.4%. A flow injection method for the assay of OTC, TC, and CTC in pharmaceutical formulations was also developed by Wangfuengkanagul et al. [12] using electrochemical detection at anodized boron-doped diamond thin-film electrode. The detection limit was found to be 10 nM (signal-to-noise ratio = 3). [Pg.102]

In most cases, the orbital relaxation contribution is negligible and the Fukui function and the FMO reactivity indicators give the same results. For example, the Fukui functions and the FMO densities both predict that electrophilic attack on propylene occurs on the double bond (Figure 18.1) and that nucleophilic attack on BF3 occurs at the Boron center (Figure 18.2). The rare cases where orbital relaxation effects are nonnegligible are precisely the cases where the Fukui functions should be preferred over the FMO reactivity indicators [19-22], In short, while FMO theory is based on orbitals from an independent electron approximation like Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham, the Fukui function is based on the true many-electron density. [Pg.259]

Just as for group 5, 6, and 7 ( -CsF MCU species, Fehlner has shown that BH3-THF or Li[BH4] react with group 8 and 9 cyclopentadienyl metal halides to result in metallaborane clusters, many of them having a metal boron ratio of 1 3 and 1 4, and much of the synthetic chemistry and reactivity shows close connections with the earlier transition metals. The main difference between the early and later transition metallaboranes that result is that the latter are generally electron precise cluster species, while as has been shown, the former often adopt condensed structures. Indeed, as has been pointed out by King, many of the later transition metallaborane clusters that result from these syntheses have structures closely related to binary boranes and, in some cases, metal carbonyl clusters such as H2Os6(CO)18.159... [Pg.158]

The calibration graph was linear in the range 0.5-5pg of boron in aqueous solution (20-200pg L 1 of boron in the final solution to be measured). The detection limit and precision were lpg L 1 of boron and 3% for ten replicate determinations of 1.2pg of boron, respectively. Interference by foreign ions is minimal (see Table 12.1). [Pg.314]

In contrast to many chemotherapeutic agents in cancer therapy, boron compounds for BNCT do not require a tumoricidal action in their own right. For their successful application in the therapy of patients, it is important to deliver, to the tumor, a radiation dose which is higher than the radiation dose to the surrounding tissue. The demonstration that this is actually achieved lies ultimately in the treatment of the tumor in question. Because of the short range of the particles produced in the 10B(n,a)7Li reaction, it is very important where, on a cellular and subcellular dimension, the neutron capture reaction takes place. Different methods for boron detection and quantification give different resolution of the boron distribution. It is instructive to compare these methods, both for their precision and lower detection limits, as well as for their ability to yield an image of the boron distribution in tissue (Table 2.2-1). [Pg.120]

Heteroboranes are those in which one or more non-boron atoms replace a BH vertex, together with groups that may be attached to these heteroatoms. Boranes that contain CH vertices constitute the vast family of carbaboranes. The possibility for carbon to participate in electron-deficient frameworks contradicted the former prejudice of the always electron-precise carbon as the well-behaved brother of naughty boron. So far, most elements have been introduced as heteroatoms into borane frameworks, with the exception of the halogens and the noble gases. [Pg.322]

Somewhat disappointingly, the values of AHf [A(g)] of some first-and second-row elements A (notably boron and silicon) are not precisely known because of a variety of experimental difficulties. However, well-established precise heats of formation of BF3 [69] and SiF4 [70] are... [Pg.57]

Thus, for the determination of difficult elements, such as tungsten, boron and molybdenum, this technique produces substantially more precise and accurate results than traditional batch operation. The DCP/OES parameters can he set to various levels to accommodate wide concentration ranges. [Pg.209]

As noted above, the range of fibers employed does not precisely overlap with those employed for organic composites. Because the formation of the MMCs generally requires melting of the metal-matrix, the fibers need to have some stability to relatively high temperatures. Such fibers include graphite, silicon carbide, boron, alumina-silica, and alumina fibers. Most of these are available as continuous and discontinuous fibers. It also includes a number of thin metal wires made from tungsten, titanium, molybdenum, and beryllium. [Pg.255]
