M hydrochloric acid solution, white vinegar, colorless carbonated soft drink, borax soap solution, distilled water grease pencil droppers (9)... [Pg.86]

Predict what ion might be involved in the cleaning process based upon your data for the ammonia, soap, and borax soap solutions. [Pg.87]

Form a hypothesis that explains why the borax soap solution was less basic than an ammonia solution of approximately the same concentration. [Pg.87]

Potassium biduoride crystals may break down to a fine white powder that is readily airborne. In this form, the salt is quite irritating to the nasal passages, eyes, and skin. Therefore, the hands and eyes should be protected and acid dust masks should be worn while handling, as an acid duoride KHF2 can cause superficial hydroduoric acid-type bums. Areas of skin that have been in contact with potassium biduoride should be washed as soon as possible with mildly alkaline soaps or borax-containing hand cleaners. If there has been contact with the eyes, they should be washed well with water and a physician should be consulted. [Pg.231]

Economic Aspects and Uses. The principal producers in the United States are U.S. Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemicals Co., and American Borate Corp. Their combined aimual capacity in 1989 was reported to be 735,000 metric tons of equivalent boron oxide [1303-86-2], B2O2 (20). Of this toimage, 50% is exported. About 30% of boron compounds are used in glass fiber insulation. Another 30% is used in other type fibers and borosihcate glasses. Boron is also used in soaps and detergents, fire retardants, and agriculture (see Boron compounds). [Pg.409]

India ink is stabilized to prevent sedimentation by adding substances such as shellac in borax solution, soap, gelatine, glue, gum arabic, and dextrin. [Pg.445]

Borax is used as a cleaning agent and water softener that removes ions of elements such as magnesium and calcium that cause hard water. When these hard water elements are mixed with soap, they prevent soap from sudsing and form a scum or residue that is deposited on hard surfaces. Borax can ehminate this residue ring by replacing the Mg and Ca ions with the more soluable Na and ions. Borax is the third most important boron compound. [Pg.177]

Refined borax (Na B Op is an additive in laundry products such as soaps and water-softening compounds. Also used for cosmetics, body powders, and the manufacture of paper and leather. Borax is an environmentally safe natural herbicide and insecticide. [Pg.178]

In medicated soaps, substances of medicinal value are added. In some soaps, deodorants are added. Shaving soaps contain glycerol to prevent rapid drying. A gum called, rosin is added while making them. It forms sodium roslnate which lathers well. Laundry soaps contain fillers like sodium roslnate, sodium silicate, borax and sodium carbonate. [Pg.174]

Borax has a great- number of uses outside the home. It is used for soldering, for producing certain kinds of soap, and for making other boron compounds. [Pg.57]

Sodium perborate has been for some time in use mixed with soap, borax, alkali, etc., and is sold for laundry work under such names as Persil, Glarax, and Ozonite. It possesses detergent and bleaching properties. Since 1914 the salt NaBOj, 4H20 has been produced by electrolysis, and many recent patents deal with this process. Formerly, the only means available for preparation was that of mixing borax with hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.23]

Experiment 51. — Determine by the litmus test the nature of lemon juice, vinegar, soap, sweet and sour milk, washing soda, borax, wood ashes, faucet water, baking soda, sugar, cream of tartar, the juice of any ripe fruit and any green fruit. [Pg.122]

Laundry soap bars are precursors of the chip and the powder forms. They are generally made from tallow or a combination of tallow and coconut oil. Borax and builders, such as sodium silicate and sodium carbonate, are included to improve performance and help soften water [1, 2, 5]. [Pg.127]

Remedy for Scalded Moutlu In casen of scalding the mouth with hot liquids, gargle with a solution < f borax, and then hold in the mouth a mncilago of slippery elm, swallowing it slowly, if the throat also has boon scalded tho slippery elm bark may be mixed with oliro oil. omo rceomweDd soap liniment, but tho latter must not be swallowed. [Pg.319]
