Boron borates

Boron and Borates. Boron is an essential element for plant growth however, concentrations >2 mg/L are harmful to some plants. [Pg.231]

Borate reacts with curcumin [458-37-7] C2 H2qO, in the presence of a mineral acid to give a colored 1 2 bore acid curcumin complex that has been used to determine microamounts of boron. Carrninic acid [1260-17-9J, C22H2QO23, (98) and azomethine-H (99) also form a colored complex usehil for low level detection of borates. Boron compounds give a characteristic green color when burned in a flame. [Pg.200]

Boron may be prepared by several methods, such as chemical reduction of boron compounds, electrolytic reduction in nonaqueous phase, or by thermal decomposition. Many boron compounds including boron oxides, borates, boron halides, borohydrides, and fluoroborates can be reduced to boron by a reactive metal or hydrogen at high temperatures ... [Pg.123]

The modifications of boron and boron compounds are characterized by nets or chains of boron atoms bound to each other by covalent bonds. The coordination number of the boron atoms varies between 1 and 7. The nets have the form of linked icosahedra, cuboctahedra, octahedra, graphite-like planes, or linear branched boron chains. Two-electron three-center bonds in boron-cornered triangles are the rule in the lattice structure. Boron can only form ions in combination with hydrogen (BH4 ) and oxygen (BOj ). The borates (boron oxide derivatives) form covalent nets like the silicates. They are often amorphous. [Pg.121]
