In 1938, Dr. Sanchez Belda was promoted from Director of the National Historical Archives to the Director General of Archives and Libraries, a position with political influence, under the Minister of Education and Science. Now there was not only interest but, perhaps more important, authority together in the same person. One of his first chores was to draft legislation that would implement his project of a few years before. In a matter of months after Dr. Belda took office, the Spanish chief of state signed a decree dated September 15, 1969, that established the National Center for the Restoration of Books and Documents under the Director General of Archives and Libraries (9). [Pg.39]

All flooded paper materials—books, periodicals, documents, rare books, files, and records—were frozen as quickly as possible to prevent biological growth. A restoration effort to save the library s contents and a parallel on-site applied conservation research program were established. The goal of this research program was to develop, whenever possible, new techniques and to improve traditional methods for restoring flood-damaged library materials (1). [Pg.130]

Parchment Shop. There are five restorers in this shop. Parchment documents and book covers to be restored get a mechanical surface cleaning with soft erasers then harder ones, if required, to remove dirt and grime. Hard, embrittled, and dry artifacts have their inks and pigments fixed with an acrylic resin spray or with a fine brush dipped in paraloid before immersion in a bath of ethanol and water (70% and 30%, respectively). [Pg.45]

The Gospel of Judas differs from the other texts I have discussed in this book, in that the cosmological system to which it alludes has little, if anything, to do with Middle Platonist debates on the nature and scope of heimarmene. Indeed, the word heimarmene is not to be found in the text as it exists, and I doubt that when the document is fully restored, it will be found there. The concept of Providence or Pronoia is likewise absent. [Pg.165]
