Bone marrow transplant tools

The number of immunocompromised persons is continually increasing as advances are made in medicine. The life expectancy for persons with cancer, HIV infection, and solid organ or bone marrow transplantation is increasing. Vaccination provides one tool to prevent infection in the immunocompromised host however, the individual s immuno-suppressed state will alter the response to vaccine. In general all vaccinations should be updated prior to the person becoming immunosuppressed, if possible. Once a person becomes significantly immunosuppressed, live virus vaccines should be avoided. [Pg.1249]

Thus, cell surface markers remain a useful tool and have widespread use, as evidenced by the stem cell literature. Limitations, explained in the bone marrow transplantation literature, highlight the need for the development of new methods for identifying stem cells in the emerging field of cell therapy for cardiac diseases. Indeed, functional assays will likely play an important role in stem cell selection and classification in the future. [Pg.95]

Prior to the flood, hospital and university researchers had designed a study protocol to investigate the effect of surface modification wifli silane antimicrdnals on infection rates within the Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology and Oncology areas in the hospital. The flood and subsequent microbial contamination preempted the study. But, investigation of various antimicrobial systems to achieve sustained microbial control during the study provided an important tool for use in remediation and beyond. [Pg.72]

In conclusion, clonality analysis is fundamental criteria for the diagnosis of many types of lymphoma and an essential tool for the differentiation between lymphoma and other benign or unclassified hyperplasic lymphoid lesions or pseudolymphoma. Additionally clonality analysis is also useful for the screening of bone marrow before autologous bone marrow or stem cell transplantation or for the detection of minimal residual disease in bone marrow and peripheral blood. [Pg.190]
