In a 12-month, multicenter comparison of fluticasone propionate 250-500 micrograms/day with beclomethasone dipropionate 500-1000 micrograms/day, the two drugs had an equal therapeutic effect. Fluticasone propionate treatment resulted in a higher bone mineral density (assessed at the hip) and higher serum osteocalcin concentrations. [Pg.81]

Prednisone, 10 mg/day for 1 year, has been evaluated in 136 patients with probable Alzheimer s disease in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial (196). There were no differences in the primary measures of efficacy (cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale), but those treated with prednisone had significantly greater memory impairment (Clinical Dementia sum of boxes), and agitation and hostility/suspicion (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale). Other adverse effects in those who took prednisone were reduced bone density and a small rise in intraocular pressure. [Pg.661]

Preliminary results that suggested coumarin-associated reduction in bone density have not been confirmed. In a study from the Osteoporotic Fractures Research Group, 6201 postmenopausal women who were either users (n = 149) or non-users of warfarin were assessed for fractures and bone mineral density. Over 2 years, the two groups had similar age-adjusted heel and hip bone mineral density measurements. During an average of 3.5 years, non-traumatic, non-vertebral fractures occurred in 10% of warfarin users and 9.3% of non-users (67). [Pg.986]

Bone density was analyzed in 28 women with itai-itai disease, 92 men and 114 women with Cd-induced renal dysfunction and 44 men and 66 women living in non-polluted areas using a microdensitometer [90]. To assess the degree of bone density by microdensitom-... [Pg.792]

In 1996 a convenience sample of 100 eight-year-old schoolchildren participating in a study of blood pressure and bone density (Dwyer et al., 1999 Jones et al., 2000) were selected to provide a timed overnight urine sample for iodine analysis. The median urinary iodine concentrations (UIC) was 42 tg/l (range 0-200 tg/l). The majority (92%) of the children had concentrations less than 100 tg/ 1 and 55% had levels less than 50 ig/l (Hynes, 2001). Based on the WHO categories for assessing the severity of IDD the sample of children was considered to have moderate iodine deficiency (World Health Organization,... [Pg.1235]

However, some other orthopedic implantable medical devices including carbon fiber have shown successful results. Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) has been reviewed by Li et al. [13] to assess properties, technical data, and safety in orthopedic applications. CFR-PEEK may be an ideal material as it has a modulus very similar to bone and an ability to withstand prolonged fatigue strain. It can also be manufactured to match the modulus of both cortical and cancellous bone densities. This review shows no breakdown over time, while CFR-PEEK is readily accepted by the body. One reported study done by Steinberg et al. [48] makes a comparison between commercially available devices and CFR-Peek substitutes for wear/debris. The wear/debris was assessed based on the amount of the debris generated... [Pg.294]

On long-term studies (>6 months), species can grow as large as 1 kg which may complicate terminal auditory assessments and increase the time necessary to perform histopathology due to augmented bone density. [Pg.278]

Healthcare and professional organizations expressed their concern about the lack of standardization, assessment of accuracy and precision, variation of sensitivity and error by variation of bone density in bone mineral measurement techniques like DEXA and QCT, whereas there are generally recognized as important and unresolved issues[2,3]. [Pg.47]
