Propylene glycol is commonly used to make antifreeze and deicing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats to make polyester compounds and as solvents in the paint and plastics industries. It is used as a substitute for ethylene glycol mono-alkyl ethers in all-purpose cleaners, coatings, inks, nail polish, lacquers, latex paints, and adhesives. It is also used to create artificial smoke or fog used in fire-fighting training and in theatrical productions. 

Contamination Studies. Schmidt and Pearce (22,). in a classic study, using NAA evaluated sources of contamination of silicon during device processing. Their work demonstrated clearly that high-temperature oxidation steps are particularly likely to add transition-metal contaminants. Mechanical polishing compounds, boats and handling tools, and components of ion-beam equipment were also identified as being potentially troublesome.

All water used in the analysis is deionized and polished with a Millipore Simplicity system, available from Millipore Corporation, Billerica, MA, USA. Two reagents are used in the sample boats to assist the combustion of organic materials. Additive B is a coarse aluminum oxide. Additive M is a 35 50 combination of calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. The additives, specially prepared by Wako Pure Chemical Industries, Ltd., Osaka, Japan, are available for purchase through NIC. The phosphate buffer in the scrubber vessel was prepared finm a powdered concentrate (Wako). 

The process of fuel polishing is used to clean contaminated fuel on marine vessels (Johnson, 1998). The contaminated fuel (including water and sludge) is pumped from the tank, filtered and then returned clean to the tank. Service companies can provide this service at larger ports or provide the necessary equipment for use on the boat.
