Blotters

Absorption. Some inks (eg, oil-based newspaper inks) dry by penetration or absorption into the pores of the printed stock, which has a blotter or sponge effect. This is accompHshed by the gross penetration of the ink vehicle into the pores of the substrate, the partial separation of the vehicle from the pigment, and the diffusion of the vehicle throughout the paper. The abiHty of an ink to penetrate into paper depends on the number and size of the air spaces present in the paper, the affinity or receptivity of the stock for the ink, and the mobiHty of the ink. 

Initial evaluations of chemicals produced for screening are performed by smelling them from paper blotters. However, more information is necessary given the time and expense required to commercialize a new chemical. No matter how pleasant or desirable a potential odorant appears to be, its performance must be studied and compared with available ingredients in experimental fragrances. A material may fail to Hve up to the promise of its initial odor evaluation for a number of reasons. It is not at all uncommon to have a chemical disappear in a formulation or skew the overall odor in an undesirable way. Some materials are found to be hard to work with in that their odors stick out and caimot be blended weU. Because perfumery is an individuaHstic art, it is important to have more than one perfumer work with a material of interest and to have it tried in several different fragrance types. Aroma chemicals must be stable in use if their desirable odor properties are to reach the consumer. Therefore, testing in functional product appHcations is an important part of the evaluation process. Other properties that can be important for new aroma chemicals are substantivity on skin and cloth, and the abiHty to mask certain malodors. 

Water resistance test methods include AATCC 127 (hydrostatic pressure test), AATCC 42 (impact penetration test), and AATCC 35 (rain test). In the hydrostatic pressure test, a sample is subjected to a column of increasing water pressure until leakage occurs. The impact penetration test requires water to be sprayed on the taut surface of a fabric sample from a height of two feet. The fabric is backed by a blotter of predeterrnined weight, which is reweighed after water penetration. The rain test is similar in principle to the impact penetration test. 

The rain test simulates the effects of rainfaU the hydrostatic head on the spray controls the intensity of spraying. The repeUency is rated by the weight of water that penetrates the fabric and is absorbed by a blotter mounted behind the fabric at a specific intensity of spraying (AATCC Test Methods 35 and 42 INDA Standard Test 80.2-92). 

Used directly in lubricating clarification in a "blotter press", it acts much the same manner as the paper pads, but is much thinner and is not reused. As a precoat, paper protects the filter medium from slimy fines it may be peeled off and discarded after clogging, leaving the medium underneath clean.

Once the samples on the HPTLC plate have dried, the plate is inserted into a twin trough chamber such as the one shown in Fig. 13.4 for development. Approximately 10 ml of developing solvent is placed on both sides of the tank, and a piece of blotter paper is placed on the trough opposing the HPTLC plate. The blotter paper ensures a saturated environment for the plate to develop.

LSD is an ergot alkaloid. After synthesis, blotter paper or sugar cubes are sprinkled with the liquid and allowed to dry. When LSD is swallowed, psychoactive effects typically appear after 30 minutes and last 6-12 hours. During this time, subjects have impaired ability to make rational judgments and understand common dangers, which puts them at risk for accidents and personal injury.

Two types of containers should be available for disposal purposes. One should be labeled Liquid Radioactive Waste and used for all waste solutions the other, Solid Radioactive Waste, for blotter paper, broken glassware, etc. Liquid wastes must not be poured down any drain, nor solid wastes deposited in normal trash cans. 

Minor spills must be cleaned first with absorbent blotter paper and then thoroughly rinsed with water. Always wear gloves during cleanup. Dispose of the blotter paper in the Solid Radioactive Waste container. The spill area should then be checked with a portable G-M counter.
