Agriculture. Most forages provide insufficient sodium for animal feeding and may lack adequate chloride. Thus salt supplementation is a critical part of a nutritionally balanced diet for animals. In addition, because animals have a definite appetite for salt, it can be used as a deflvery mechanism to ensure adequate intake of less palatable nutrients and as a feed limiter. Salt is an excellent carrier for trace minerals. Salt, either in loose form or as compressed blocks, can be mixed with feed or fed free-choice to improve animal health and productivity (see Feeds and feed additives). [Pg.186]

There are numerous synthetic and natural compounds called antioxidants which regulate or block oxidative reactions by quenching free radicals or by preventing free-radical formation. Vitamins A, C, and E and the mineral selenium are common antioxidants occurring naturally in foods (104,105). A broad range of flavonoid or phenoHc compounds have been found to be functional antioxidants in numerous test systems (106—108). The antioxidant properties of tea flavonoids have been characterized using models of chemical and biological oxidation reactions. [Pg.373]

Titanium Silicates. A number of titanium siUcate minerals are known (160) examples are Hsted in Table 19. In most cases, it is convenient to classify these on the basis of the connectivity of the SiO building blocks, eg, isolated tetrahedra, chains, and rings, that are typical of siUcates in general. In some cases, the SiO units may be replaced, even if only to a limited extent by TiO. For example, up to 6% of the SiO in the garnet schorlomite can be replaced by TiO. In general, replacement of SiO by TiO bull ding blocks increases the refractive indices of these minerals. Ti has also replaced Si in the framework of various zeofltes. In addition, the catalytic activity of both titanium-substituted ZSM-5 (TS-1) and ZSM-11 (TS-2) has received attention (161), eg, the selective oxidation of phenol, with hydrogen peroxide, to hydroquinone and catechol over TS-1 has been operated at the 10,000 t/yr scale in Italy (162). [Pg.132]

Elements at the right of the p block have characteristically high electron affinities they tend to gain electrons to complete closed shells. Except for the metalloids tellurium and polonium, the members of Groups 16/VI and 17/VII are nonmetals (Fig. 1.62). They typically form molecular compounds with one another. They react with metals to form the anions in ionic compounds, and hence many of the minerals that surround us, such as limestone and granite, contain anions formed from non-metals, such as S2-, CO,2-, and S042-. Some compounds of the s-block elements are important industrial chemicals, too. For example, more than 1.4 billion kilograms of K2 CO3 (potassium carbonate, whose common name is potash), is produced in the United States each year. This compound, which is obtained from mineral deposits, is the most common source of potassium for fertilizers. Fertilization with potassium is necessary because this element is essential for healthy plant growth. Moreover, potassium salts are highly soluble in water, so potassium quickly becomes depleted from the soil. Consequently, agricultural land requires frequent addition of potassium fertilizers. [Pg.556]

Acid-Soluble Mineral Fibers. Mineral fibers that are highly soluble in acid can be used to control the permeability [1242,1243] of formations. The fibers are 5 to 15 p in diameter and are formed into pellets of to inch diameter. A fluid-blocking layer formed of semidispersed pellets can bridge the face pores of the formation. After well rework, the plugging layer is treated with an acid solution to quickly dissolve the mineral fibers to the desired extent to control porosity. [Pg.288]
