The main ship parameters include ship draft, T, hull shape as represented by the block coefficient, Cb, and ship speed. Vs (m/s) or Vk (knots). Other ship parameters include the length between forward and aft perpendiculars Lpp and the beam, B. The Cb is a measure of the fineness of the vessel s shape relative to an equivalent rectangular volume with the same dimensions. The range of values of Cb is typically between 0.45 for high-speed vessels and 0.85 for slow, full-size tankers and bulk carriers. The most important ship parameter is its speed Vs. This is the relative speed of the ship in water, so fluvial and tidal currents must be included. In general. [Pg.725]

Containerships are generally fitted with thrusters (bow and/or stem) and in several cases active rodders. This coupled by the advanced hydrostatic features (i.e. block coefficient) of these vessels, results in a high level of manoeuvrability at all speed levels. High speeds, nevertheless, tend to reduce the time available for reaction by operators, adversely affecting the human reliability in close quarters situations. [Pg.95]

Cooccurrence matrix is divided into four bloeks delimited by a threshold t (fig.3). In the block Bl, the included coefficients belong to the background of the image. In the block B4, the coefficients correspond to the objects of the image, and finally, the blocks B2 and B3 contain the coefficients linked to the transitions between background and objects. [Pg.235]

In order to determine the matrix thresholds, we present an expression of the coefficients dispersion that is related to the flattening of the cloud of the points around the central axis of inertia. The aim is to measure the distance to the G barycentre in block 3. So, we define this measure Square of Mean Distance to the center of Gravity as follow ... [Pg.235]

The coefficient of friction /x between two solids is defined as F/W, where F denotes the frictional force and W is the load or force normal to the surfaces, as illustrated in Fig. XII-1. There is a very simple law concerning the coefficient of friction /x, which is amazingly well obeyed. This law, known as Amontons law, states that /x is independent of the apparent area of contact it means that, as shown in the figure, with the same load W the frictional forces will be the same for a small sliding block as for a laige one. A corollary is that /x is independent of load. Thus if IVi = W2, then Fi = F2. [Pg.431]

Calculate the angle of repose for a solid block on an inclined plane if the coefficient of friction is 0.52. [Pg.458]

Another usefiil quantity related to extinction coefficient is the cross section, a, defined for a single atom or molecule. It may be thought of as the effective area blocking the beam at a given wavelength, and the value... [Pg.1121]

The regioselectivity benefits from the increased polarisation of the alkene moiety, reflected in the increased difference in the orbital coefficients on carbon 1 and 2. The increase in endo-exo selectivity is a result of an increased secondary orbital interaction that can be attributed to the increased orbital coefficient on the carbonyl carbon ". Also increased dipolar interactions, as a result of an increased polarisation, will contribute. Interestingly, Yamamoto has demonstrated that by usirg a very bulky catalyst the endo-pathway can be blocked and an excess of exo product can be obtained The increased di as tereo facial selectivity has been attributed to a more compact transition state for the catalysed reaction as a result of more efficient primary and secondary orbital interactions as well as conformational changes in the complexed dienophile" . Calculations show that, with the polarisation of the dienophile, the extent of asynchronicity in the activated complex increases . Some authors even report a zwitteriorric character of the activated complex of the Lewis-acid catalysed reaction " . Currently, Lewis-acid catalysis of Diels-Alder reactions is everyday practice in synthetic organic chemistry. [Pg.12]

Note that the relative spatial arrangement of the phenyl, amine, and hydroxyl functionahties are identical for (R)-alprenolol and (5)-sotalol. In addition to P-blocking activities, some of these compounds also possess potent local anaesthetic activity (see Anesthetics). The membrane stabilizing activity, however, is not stereoselective and correlates directly with the partition coefficient (hydrophobicity) of the compound. [Pg.250]

One such monolithic carbon has been produced by Sutcliffe Speakman Carbons and is described by Tamainot-Telto and Critoph [17]. Powdered activated carbon is mixed with a polymeric binder, compressed in a die and fired to produce a monolith of the desired shape, with a density of 713 kg/m and conductivity of 0.33 W/mK. A heat transfer coefficient of 200 W/m K has been measured between the blocks and aluminium fins. [Pg.336]

PDMS macromonomer was used as a component of block segment to obtain a graft block copolymer with PMMA (Scheme 1) [51-53]. This graft block copolymer is characteristic of surface water repellence, easy peeling, and weatherability superior to simple graft copolymers of the same members. PDMS-b-PVC film also shows long life surface water repellency with weatherability and very low coefficiency of abrasion [18,54]. [Pg.762]

The flow of liquid in a 25 mm diameter pipe is metered with an orifice meter in which the orifice has a diameter of 19 mm. The aperture becomes partially blocked with dirt from the liquid. What fraction of the area can become blocked before the error in flowrate at a given pressure differential exceeds 15 per cent Assume that the coefficient of discharge of the meter remains constant when calculated on the basis of the actual free area of the orifice. [Pg.837]
