Hair, bleached

After the hair is bleached it has an uimatural straw-like color and is then dyed to the desired tone with either a semipermanent or a permanent hair color product. The dye products designed to color bleached hair to a natural looking blonde shade are called toners.

The calcium hypochlorite or sodium dichloroisocyanurate used to disinfect swimming pools also bleaches hair, although contrary to popular belief it does not turn the hair green. It simply allows the green copper sulfate from the water to show up in the hair. The copper sulfate comes from the reaction of the copper pipes in the plumbing to the sulfuric acid used to neutralize the alkalies in the chlorination chemicals. 

Malnourished children can have two very different appearances. Both have brittle, bleached hair, skin lesions and a deeply apathetic demeanour. Although the two conditions intergrade they show some geographical separation with kwashiorkor being restricted to tropical and subtropical regions while marasmus can occur anywhere.

To this dry mixture, add 1 ounce (about 41/2 teaspoons) of hydrogen peroxide This is the same material sold in drugstores and used in beauty salons to bleach hair. In dilute solutions it is used as an antiseptic. 

Cystine, which contains a disulfide bond, is reported to be the most numerous and reactive amino acid present in hair keratin. Disulfide bonds in cystine are reduced by mercaptans and phosphines, and oxidized by perborates, bromates, and bleach. These reactions result in structural rearrangements within keratin which may affect the physiochemical properties of hair, since disulfide bonds in cystine contribute to the stability of hair. For example, hydrogen peroxide bleaching of hair is an oxidative process which occurs readily in an alkaline medium. This results in the formation of perhydroxy anions which have been proposed to react with cystine to form cysteic acid residues. The process of bleaching results in the loss of approximately 15% of the cystine bonds originally present in keratin and may explain the increased permeability of bleached hair to chemicals. - ... 

Treatment of wool or hair with carbodiimides improves the wash fastness of applied dyes. The cosmetic qualities of bleached hair can be improved by treatment with N-cyclohexyl-N -(N-methylmorpholino)carbodiimide. N-ethyl-N -(3-trimethylammonio)propylcarbodiimide Axes the red dye 2-nitro-4[08-aminoethyl)amino]aniline to hair, most likely via an amide linkage. The coupling of a phosphorous dyestuff to cellulosic materials can also be accomplished using a carbodiimide. ... 

Use thermochemical Equations a and b to determine AH for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a compound that has uses ranging from bleaching hair to energizing rocket engines. 

Emesis is likely to be spontaneous. Clinical signs may include salivation, emesis, abdominal pain and tenderness, hematemesis, and bleached hair. Rats given 5-15 ml kg of an alkaline (pH 12.0) solution containing 4.5% sodium hypochlorite died within 1-3 h from severe local damage to the esophagus and stomach. 

It s oxygen gas that produces the foam when you use hydrogen peroxide as an antiseptic to clean a cut or scrape. It s also oxygen that bleaches hair when a peroxide bleach is used. Some household cleansers use oxygen bleach rather than chlorine bleach. 

In radiotracer experiments conducted in the authors laboratories, deposition of Polymer-JR was found to be almost 2.3 times greater for bleached hair than for virgin hair, indicating a greater number of negative binding sites on the former (Table 10.16).
