Black stone

Jerome Cardan, an Italian mathematician, determines that while amber attracts light objects, a magnetic black stone attracts only iron. This is the first in a scries of discoveries that links electricity to magnetism. [Pg.1243]

Then from the four lands came the Four Guardians of the World who offered chalices made of sapphire. But Buddha refused them. Again they offered four chalices made of black stone (muggavanna) and he, full of compassion for the four wise men, accepted the four chalices. He placed one inside the other and ordained, Let them be one And the edges of the four chalices became visible as outlines. All the chalices formed one. The Buddha accepted food in the newly formed Chalice and, having partaken of the food, he offered thanks. [Pg.36]

Upon referring to Sir Hans Sloane s catalogue, said Hatchett before the Royal Society on November 26, 1801, I found that this specimen was only described as a very heavy black stone, with golden streaks which proved to be yellow mica and it appeared that it had been sent with various specimens of iron ores to Sir Hans Sloane by Mr. Winthrop of Massachusetts. The name of the mine, or place where it was found, is also noted in the catalogue the writing, however, is scarcely... [Pg.372]

In an article on the life and mineral collection of Sir Hans Sloane, Jessie M. Sweet states that The only specimen which fortunately is still in the Mineral Collection is the original fragment of columbite (B. M. 60309), of which a brief account may be given here. Sloane describes it in the catalogue of Metalls, No. 2029, as A very heavy black stone with golden streaks. . . from Nautneague. From Mr. Winthrop (40). [Pg.377]

Bufotenine was isolated from skin and parotid gland of the toad Bufo vulgaris in 1893, and from plants and mushrooms. It is also foimd in the toad Bufo marinus that lives in the southern part of the United States and the Caribbean, and in Bufo alvarius, found in the southwestern United States. Amazon explorers had described poisoning by toad and mushroom preparations more than 400 years ago. Street names include black stone, Chan Su, Chinese love stones, cohoba, rock hard. Stud 100, and toad. [Pg.96]

Two recent publications provide new and provocative input to this dialogue. One of these involved a series of appearances of a reddish substance on the East Coast called Chinese Love Stone, Black Stone, Rock Hard or Stud 100, being sold as aphrodisiacs. They were to be moistened and rubbed on the genitals, but as might be expected, quite a few were eaten and eventually smoked. They contained steroidal toxins, and were possibly related to some frog origins, but they were claimed to be bufotenine and indeed contained bufotenine in addition to several cardiotoxins as well as 5-MeO-DMT. [Pg.127]

Even the Mohammedans preserve a record of the tradition in Heliogablus (the Sun-Moon), a Black Stone which hangs suspended in the mosque at Mecca. The tradition is that this Stone fell from heaven in the desert of Arabia, and was found by Mohammed, who brought it to Mecca, where it has since remained, an object of awe and reverence. [Pg.28]

How it became reduced to the form of a Black Stone was a very great mystery, which could be solved only by the two sole inhabitants of the desert, the camel and its rider. First the camel ate the vegetation, which in its series of stomachs passed through a peculiar chemical transformation or reduction, into the form of a stone. The virtue of this stone was revealed to Mohammed in a dream, wherein the Angel of the Lord descended, and, taking a piece of this Stone, burned it upon live coals until it became... [Pg.28]

AZENSALI — is a black stone found in gold ore. It is also moss which grows on the rocks. [Pg.62]

Long red Fluors, like an upright beam, whence are obtained those small black stones from which White Lead is obtained. [Pg.135]

Long, white, pellucid Fluors, in the middle of which is a small black stone, from which White Lead is made. [Pg.135]

Very black and multiangular-not unlike the black stones out of which White Lead is excocted. [Pg.136]

A black species, found at Gossaria, which exudes a yellow fluid very hard and unknown to jewellers. It is found, but that rarely, in the portion of the ancient Hercynian forest which filled the country between the Weser and Elbe. It is undoubtedly the black stone Medus of Albertus, which also when broken exuded a yellow fluid. There is another species of a green colour. The name Medus refers to Media whence it is brought, and it is also found near the Phasis, a river of Colchis. [Pg.156]

A 42-year-old HIV-positive man with a prior history of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia who had been treated with zidovudine and dideoxycytidine started to take saquinavir 600 mg tds. His CD4 cell count rose from 28 X 10 /1 to 101 X 10 /1 and zidovudine and dideoxycytidine were replaced by stavudine and lamivudine, because of mild peripheral neuropathy. Saquinavir was continued unchanged. A few months later he developed left-sided loin pain and hematuria and a left renal calculus was seen on ultrasound. A month later the same signs and symptoms recurred and a few weeks later he passed a small black stone in the urine. Ultrasonic lithotripsy was performed, with a good result. Saquinavir was discontinued, after which he had no further renal problems. [Pg.3105]

Gadolinium was named for Finnish chemist Johan Gadolin (1760— 1852). Gadolin served for many years as professor of chemistry at the University of Abo in Finland. He was the first person to study an unusual black stone discovered near the town of Ytterby, Sweden, in 1787. The stone was an unusually important discovery. Chemists isolated nine new elements from the stone, one of which was gadolinium. [Pg.203]

Toward the end of the 1830s, Mosander became interested in an unusual black stone found near the town of Bastnas, Sweden. He learned that the stone contained two new materials. He thought those materials were both new elements. Mosander called them cerium and lanthanum. He was right about cerium, but wrong about lanthanum. The material Mosander called lanthanum later turned out to be a mixture of six new elements. [Pg.302]

Historians today give credit for the discovery of niobium to Hatchett. The English chemist found the element in a very heavy black stone, with... [Pg.383]

Nobody can get from the black to the white colour, other than through the Peacock s tail, and nobody can get from the white to the red colour, other than through the yellow colour. The multi-coloured and the white Stone represents Spring, the yellow stone represents Summer, and the red stone represents Autumn, meaning the ripe fruit. [Pg.72]

Take these," said the old man, holding out a white stone and a black stone that had been embedded at the center of the breastplate. "They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies yes, and the white no. When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so. Always ask an objective question. [Pg.15]

Sand is made up of rock broken down into tiny pieces. Sand is also made of small pieces of coral, shell, lava, and other things, such as quartz and black stone. Because these are so colorful, sand is, too, when you look closely. The sand made from well-worn rocks and stone gives deserts their warm tan and earthy tones. The white beaches found on... [Pg.61]
