The radius of the second cation in known MuNbOFs, MU2Nb03F3 and Mul2Nb05F compounds containing bi- and trivalent metals, is usually similar to that of niobium s ionic radius. Such compounds cannot be considered as having an island-type structure and will be discussed later on. Only bismuth-containing compounds (Bi3+) display the presence of different cationic sublattices in their crystal structure. 

From these compendia we find negligible relevant data nor any useful patterns or insight for our study of arsenic-, antimony- and bismuth-containing compounds.

The Dragendorjf reagent is available in different compositions, and it mainly stains nitrogen-containing compounds, producing colored zones on a white background. Cyclic triarylbismuth(III) compounds also undergo the Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with benzoyl chloride (Scheme 27) [42]. The exocyclic aryl group was selectively transferred to form 4-methylbenzophenone in good yield. Bismuth-containing products could not be isolated except for the cyclic bismuth compound possessing a SO2 moiety, for which cyclic bismuth chloride was isolated in 86% yield.

A truly remarkable bismuth-sulfur compound was recently reported by Muller et al. (equation 63).205 The dark brown compound contains an anion which is essentially two S7 rings joined by a spiro bismuth atom, and two of these bismuth groups are joined by an S6 chain (73). This bismuth coordination polyhedron is a highly distorted square pyramid, the apex of which is the sulfur of the S6 chain, d(Bi—SapiCai) 2.683 A (av) and d(Bi—Seq) 2.817 A. 

A thermographic material with only one heat-sensitive component is prepared by reaction of an organometallic compound such as phenylmercury(II) nitrate with a thiourea derivative.230 The product is ball milled and coated in a binder such as poly(vinyl acetate). Other organometallic compounds disclosed are those of bismuth, tin, gallium and germanium combined with a variety of sulfur-containing compounds such as thioamides and xanthates.

Organoantimony(III) and -bismuth(III) compounds containing electronegative atoms such as halogen, oxygen and so on show Lewis acidic character. Thus, tetracoordinate anions and even pentacoordinate dianions have been prepared from the corresponding halides or pseudohalides, and several of the compounds have recently been fully characterized by X-ray crystallography. The radio-opacity of X-ray contrast media depends on the fact that they contain substances that have high atomic numbers, which absorb X-rays. Bismuth, now largely obsolete, has an atomic number of 83, barium 56. Since the soluble salts of barium are poisonous, the insoluble salt, barium sulfate, is used as a suspension. Soluble contrast media are based on iodine, which has an atomic number of 53. This means that in principle they can have the various adverse effects of other iodine-containing compounds.
