Biotechnology market

Several pharmaceutical and diagnostic products produced using recombinant DNA techniques are already on the market and more are on the way. It has been estimated that by the year 2000, the biotechnology market could reach 100 billion. The predictions are that high value-added specialty products are likely to appear first, followed by production of chemicals and feedstocks, and later, biomass conversion.

The largest application of industrial enzymes is in detergents [1,2]. The detergent industry absorbs about 45% of enzyme sales in western Europe [2] and more than 25% of the total worldwide enzyme production [5,6]. Enzymes represent one of the largest successes of modern biotechnology. Market analyst Frost Sullivan (London) estimated that the total European enzyme market reached 350 million in 1992 and will rise to nearly 590 million by 2000 [2]. A Freedonia Group study evaluated the 1994 sales in the United States at 660 million and expects it to reach 1.3 billion in 2000 [7]. Detergent enzymes represented 500 million in 1995, of which 125-150 million was used in the United States...

The market for products of traditional biotechnology is currently worth around 250 times more than those of the new biotechnology, although it is predicted that the new biotechnology will account for an increasingly larger fraction of the total biotechnology industry. 

A major force behind this evolntion will be the explosion of new products and materials that will enter the market dnring the next two decades. Whether from the biotechnology industry, the electronics industry, or the high-performance materials indnstry, these products will be critically dependent on structure and design at the molecular level for their usefulness. They will require manufacturing processes that can precisely control their chemical composition and stracture. These demands will create new opportunities for chemical engineers, both in product design and in process irmovation.
