Biomass energy density

Another emerging area m biofuels is pyrolysis, which is the decomposition of biomass into other more usable fuels using a high-temperature anaerobic process. Pyrolysis converts biomass into charcoal and a liquid called biocrude. This liquid has a high energy density and is cheaper to transport and store than the unconverted biomass. Biocrude can be burned in boilers or used in a gas turbine. Biocrude also can be chemical by altered into other fuels or chemicals. Use of pyrolysis may make bioenergy more feasible in regions not near biomass sources. Biocrude is about two to four times more expensive than petroleum crude. [Pg.160]

Liquid fuels have a high energy density, and the widest applicability of all fuel forms, but a low efficiency of conversion from biomass. The density of energy in the pipeline is far lower for biomass than for oil. The present work is based on 30% biomass by volume in a carrier liquid. Wasp et al. (6) based their work on 22% biomass. Brebner (4) and Elliott (5) indicated that at about 47% concentration by volume a slurry of wood chips and water cannot flow. Given the low heat content of wood per unit volume relative to oil and the low concentration of wood chips in water, the energy density in a 30% wood chip slurry is about 8% compared to oil, even based on HHV, and hence far larger pipelines are required to transport the same amount of energy. [Pg.37]

Important biomass fuel properties for thermochemical conversion processes are reported as proximate and ultimate analyses. The proximate and ultimate analyses for selected biomass feedstocks are presented in Table 33.5. For comparison, the analyses from two selected coal samples are also presented. Biomass generally has a lower energy density than coal, oils, and natural gas it also has higher oxygen content. The higher volatiles and oxygen content of biomass translate into a higher reactivity compared to traditional fossil fuels.
