Biological performance testing

The reproducibility of a determination is a critical element of a standard method, so they are carefully written to ensure that they can be followed accurately by any qualified laboratory. The designated test biological RMs must not only be reproducible in their reactions to the performance tests, but they must also respond in a predicable manner. In order to guarantee that the same strain of microorganisms could always be available, many of these biological RMs have been deposited with the ATCC and other culture collections around the world. 

No specific biologic marker/test is available for pulmonary agents as a class however, exposure to bromine might be indicated by detection of elevated bromide levels in serum (reference level is 50-100 mg/L), or if chlorine or bromine is released and they are detected in environmental samples. The case can be confirmed if laboratory testing is not performed because either a predominant amount of clinical and nonspecific laboratory evidence is present or an absolute certainty of the etiology of the agent is known. 

The National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical Biological Products (NICPBP) performs tests on the drug samples submitted. Based on the test results and the report from the CDE, the DDR approves the conduct of clinical trials at designated hospitals in China (Fig. 8.13). 

The biological half-life in humans for methyl mercury is about 70 days because elimination is slow, irregular, and individualized, there is a considerable risk of an accumulation of mercury to toxic levels. A precise relationship between atmospheric levels of alkyl mercury and concentrations of mercury in blood or urine has not been shown. Clinical observations indicate that concentrations of 50-100pg mercury/lOOml of whole blood may be associated with symptoms of intoxication concentrations around 10-20pg mercury/ 100 ml are not associated with symptoms. In a study of 20 workers engaged in the manufacture of organic mercurials and exposed for 6 years to mercury concentrations in air between 0.01 and O.lmg/m, there was no evidence of physical impairment or clinical laboratory abnormalities. Low levels of methyl mercury in the blood do not seem to affect the results of behavioral performance tests. ... 

A positive result of TDF use in waste wood boilers is that facilities are able to bum sludge and waste wood more successfully, decreasing the likelihood of solid waste disposal problems. Results from a series of waste wood boiler performance tests using ASMS codes concluded that use of TDF supplementally in hog-fuel boilers enhances combustion of wood waste, and enables disposal of biological sludge in conjunction with wood waste without necessitating use of other fossil fuels such as coal.2 No applicable environmental limits were exceeded during these tests.2...
