In addition, the results of biological tests of the compounds synthesized showed that only one possessed the high antiviral activity against adenovirus type 23 and several of them had moderate-to-week activities towards Gram-positive bacteria and pathogenic fungi, whereas the rest of compounds were inactive. 

S. aculeolatus produces a group of antibiotics [33] with biological activity against Gram-positive bacteria (47-50). The structure of these antibiotics [34] was clarified by physico-chemical methods, mainly by ID and 2D NMR. It was found that the production in a 50 L fermentor reaches up to several tens of milligrams of pure compounds. 

More than 500 different representatives of the macrolide antibiotics are known, most of which are biologically active against Gram-positive bacteria, displaying a relatively low toxicity. Clinically used are erythromycin, oleandomycin, carbomycin and leucomycin (O Fig. 5). They act as inhibitors of the bacterial protein biosynthesis by binding to the 50S-ribosomal subunit. The synthesis of the two clinically important 16-membered ring macrolide antibiotics leucomycin A3 and carbomycin B could be started from D-glucose, which was chosen because it contained three of the required stereocenters [40].
