Bioengineering Career Opportunities in Sports and Sports Equipment Design... 

This chapter first introduces trends in bioengineering educational programs. A description of future opportunities is described, followed by a survey of employment and a career outlook, with some thoughts on finding a job in the realm of bioengineering. 

Since the 2001-2002 academic year, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Academic Council has collected data on bachelors, masters, and PhD graduating bioengineering students from US institutions [5], [26]. These four years of data are the most accurate reflection of bioengineering graduation rates and the careers selected. The participation in the survey is voluntary and carried out via email in the fall of each year.

A career in the medical device industry can be psychologically and financially rewarding. Most bioengineers do not optimize their career path, and thus miss out on many of these rewards. Students who have chosen to major in bioengineering may want to consider a career as a physician because the two fields share many attributes. Bioengineering and medicine are both intellectually challenging, science-based, technology driven, service-oriented, financially secure, and well-respected fields. 

Being a physician is an excellent career choice, and medical school is an option that bioengineering students may want to consider. While some of the issues involved have been raised here, students definitely will need to do more research before embarking on this career path. Students may find the reading list at the end of the chapter useful in this regard. 

Opportunities for employment, or a career involving biotechnology and bioengineering intellectual property law, may be found in government or the private sector, and may provide employment in any of the professions described above.
