The useful reviews of chemical and biological work on the tobacco alkaloids by Jackson,Roark, ( ) and Markwood issued in the United States have been referred to already and to these may be added that of Holman published in the United Kingdom, and the handbook of reference tables on the biochemistry of tobacco issued by Smirnov et al. in Russia. [Pg.49]

Microbial RNases with known substrate specificity are listed in Table XII. Nucleases with DNase activity are not included. It should be noted here that the lists of RNases in both animal and plant kingdoms are presented in the monograph by Privat de Garilhe (4) and in a chapter by E. A. Barnard in Annual Review of Biochemistry (1969) (135). [Pg.243]

As now, communication between biochemists was good, but different. Because numbers were modest most biochemists in the United Kingdom knew, or had at least met, most other biochemists. (Membership of the British Biochemical Society in 1946 was 1017, in 1973, 5877, and in 1997, over 9000). Meetings were smaller with multiple sessions uncommon. It wasn t too difficult to be aware of developments outside one s own field. There were fewer journals, and many fewer specialized ones. The first International Congress of Biochemistry was in Cambridge, UK, in August, 1949. Most biochemists attended the 5th International in Moscow in 1961, and many the 7th in Tokyo in 1967. By then, there had to be parallel sessions. [Pg.276]
