The concern over environmental issues and sustainability has opened up another vibrant research field, namely, biobased and biodegradable polymer blends. An overview of major developments and recent trends in biodegradable blends with an emphasis on PLA blends are also discussed. This chapter closes with an outlook for the future of this important subject. 

In this chapter, several classes of biopolymers are discussed. First, biobased and biodegradable polymers are considered, together with wood plastic composites (WPCs) (Section 8.2). A field of increasing importance is the application of polymers in medicine, particularly their use in the human body (Section 8.3). 

Biobased and biodegradable polymers have two different meanings. Biobased products are materi s made from some amount of biobased materials (Narayan 2006). Biobased products were defined in the 2002 Farm Bill as commercial or industrial products that are composed in whole, or in significant part, of biological products, renewable agricultural materials, or forestry materials. The definition was expanded with the 2008 Farm Bill that incorporated biobased intermediate ingredients or feedstock (Biobased 2013).
