In a plastics compound they create an electrically conductive network in the moulded part. The fibres are available as a continuous bundle and in chopped fibre form. The latter are bound with polymeric binders specific for various resins, forming concentrates of stainless steel fibres, designed for easy dispersion into the matrix. Dry blends or melt compounds with the fibre are also available worldwide.

Although developed specifically for use with large solid proplnt rocket motors, composed mainly of active ingredients such as ammonium perchlorate imbedded in an inert binder, the method is claimed to be applicable to other solids as well...

Properties of the HDA boards prepared from the activated substrate may be compared to the phenol-formaldehyde (PF) boards prepared using 6 resin solids. Binder and/or lubricant selection depends on many considerations which are specific for the particular application. The additives must be compatible with the material to be agglomerated and the proposed uses of the product. For example, for pharmaceutical or food applications no toxic materials can be selected and for agglomeration of metal-bearing dusts intended for use in steel making sulfur-containing additives are normally prohibited. Many such limitations may be defined for specific materials and applications.
