Abstract Understanding the ways in which the constituents of ionic liquids, i.e. the type of cation, its substitution, and the type of anion chosen, interact with reactants is prerequisite to deliberately designing an ionic liquid solvent with optimum performance. Several approaches, including physico-chemical and spectroscopic measurements and computational studies of binary ionic liquid-substrate mixtures have been presented that investigate the strength of interactions. [Pg.43]

Finally, X-ray diffraction has been used to examine the liquid structure of binary ionic liquids of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium fluoride with HF [173,174], The solid state and liquid structures are closely related as both contain [HF2] anions. In contrast, Shodai et al. reported that the structure of liquid [(CH3)4N]F HF (n = 3-5) has a range of anion structures of the form [(HF)jcFp (x = 1-3). In this case, structures with x = 4 or 5 were not found in the liquid phase although similar compositions have been found in the solid state [175], These studies show that even elements that are rarely studied in the IL context like P (other than in PF ( or phosphonium cations) or F could provide access to interesting and potentially useful ILs. [Pg.140]

In all these studies, EXAFS has illustrated some of the problems associated with using ionic liquids as extraction media [63-65]. In each case, the anions formed caused the ionic liquid to become more hydrophilic by forming a binary ionic liquid, and leaching of the ionic liquid into the aqueous phase occurs. [Pg.197]

Chloroaluminate(III) salts belong to a class of ionic liquids called binary ionic liquids. The composition of a chloroaluminate ionic liquid is best described by the apparent mole fraction of AlCJj X(AlClj) present. Ionic liquids with X(AlCh) < 0.5 contain an excess of Cl ions, and are called basic ... [Pg.294]

The Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction has also been performed in iron(lll) chloride ionic liquids by Seddon and coworkers [73]. An example is the acetylation ofbenzene (Scheme 5.2-29). The ionic liquids of the type [EMIM]Cl-FeCl3 (0.50 < X < 0.62) are good acylation catalysts, with the added benefit that the ketone product of the reaction can be separated from the ionic liquid by solvent extraction, provided that X is in the range 0.51-0.55. An improvement on the iron(lll) binary ionic liquids... [Pg.306]

Unfortunately, the answer is still, yes The fact that we have in hand much more reliable physicochemical data on pure, binary ionic liquids today does not hide the fact that we still have to greatly improve our fundamental understanding of ionic liquids to make full use of their potential. This concerns the detailed investigation of the nature of interactions between the ions of an ionic liquid (and here not only binary ionic liquids should be considered ), on the one hand, and of the nature of interactions between ionic liquids and dissolved substances or surfaces of solids, on the other. [Pg.692]

Broadly speaking, ionic liquids are of two types simple salts (made up of a single anion and cation) and binary ionic liquids the latter are salts where an equilibrium is involved. It is the binary ionic liquids that are used as green solvents. Some examples of simple salt are given (Scheme 1). [Pg.232]

An example of a binary ionic liquid system is a mixture of aluminium (III) chloride and 1,3-dialkylimidazolium chloride. It contains several different ionic species and their m.p. and properties depend upon the mole fractions of AICI3... [Pg.232]

Phase Behaviour of Binary Ionic Liquid Systems... [Pg.369]

The phase behaviour of binary ionic liquid systems can roughly be divided into three classes (i) ionic liquids with dissolved gases, (ii) ionic liquids with water and (hi) ionic liquids with organic solvents. The first class involves vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data, whereas the last two classes mainly involve liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data. [Pg.369]

The most investigated binary ionic liquid systems are mixtures with carbon dioxide (CO2). In 1999, Blanchard et al showed that the solubility of CO2 in imidazolium-based ionic liquids is very high, however, CO2 is not able to dissolve any ionic liquid. Therefore, it was found possible to extract a solute from an ionic liquid using supercritical CO2 without any contamination by the ionic liquid. ... [Pg.369]

Common UCST behaviour has also been observed for mixtures consisting of two ionic liquids with the same anion and a different cation.Less common lower eritical solution temperature (LCST) behaviour has been observed for binary ionic liquid mixtures with benzene, chloroalkanes " and polymers. Interestingly, the LCST behaviour of benzene with an imidazo-lium-based ionic liquid changed via hour-glass to UCST behaviour when the imidazolium alkyl chain length was increased. Moreover, imidazolium-based ionic liquids were found to form clathrate structures with benzene at low temperatures, whereas the solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) of other organics or water with ionic liquids are simple eutectic systems. [Pg.374]

Althought originally developed for systems involving nonelectrolytes, the NRTL model has successfully been applied to correlate the UCST behaviour of binary ionic liquid with water 207,20s organics. ... [Pg.380]

More reliable phase behaviour predictions for binary ionic liquid systems with carbon dioxide or organics come from group-contribution equations of state, such as the universal functional activity coefficient (UNIFAC) method, the group-contribution nonrandom lattice ffuid equation of... [Pg.381]

It should be noted that the synthesis of highly pure, binary ionic liquids places particular demands on the preparative work. The purity of the system is essential for many solvent applications and for the characterization of their physical and chemical properties (Wasserscheid Keim, 2000). [Pg.497]
