Big crunch

As well as we believe we know the past, so uncertain is the long-term prognosis. Will the universe continue to expand or will it reach an equilibrium state Will the process of origin be reversed and end in a "Big Crunch" This would essentially entail all matter being sucked into an inconceivable Black Hole. A new Big Bang could then take place. Would the same laws of nature... 

Research into the future of the universe is clearly speculative. Whether the universe will continue to expand indefinitely depends on its mean density. Below a critical level (the critical density), gravitational attraction will not be enough to stop the expansion. However, if the mean density is above the critical density the universe is bound and an eventual contraction will occur resulting in a big crunch. This may precede another big bang initiating the whole cycle again. 

The future evolution of the universe depends on whether the expansion will continue forever or, due to the presence of enough mass (cosmologists say that the mass density exceeds a critical value), the expansion will be stopped by gravitational attraction and a big crunch will result in the future.
