Psychoses, when they occur, appear to be due to drug effect interacting with a vulnerable personality organization (Luisada 1978). Our experience has been that some adolescents with borderline personality disorders, as well as adolescents at risk of schizophrenic decompensation, may have this vulnerability. Although we do not have hard data to support the hypothesis that patients with PCP psychoses that are most resistant to treatment have the poorest long-term prognosis (Erard et al. 1980), our observations have been that persistence of symptoms of psychosis after the first 2 to 3 weeks of treatment often correlates with extended periods of impai rment. [Pg.270]

As well as we believe we know the past, so uncertain is the long-term prognosis. Will the universe continue to expand or will it reach an equilibrium state Will the process of origin be reversed and end in a "Big Crunch" This would essentially entail all matter being sucked into an inconceivable Black Hole. A new Big Bang could then take place. Would the same laws of nature... [Pg.21]

There are several prerequisites to the initiation of treatment for depression. The diagnosis of depression must be firmly established, and any comorbid psychiatric or medical illnesses that may affect the treatment should be identified. Medical causes for the depression must also be ruled out. Finally, the diagnosis, its long-term prognosis, and treatment options should be discussed with the patient. Only then can well-informed treatment begin. [Pg.62]

The results show that a perfect relation exists between time and TOW-ISO, so both variables are equivalent and can be used for purposes of long term prognosis. [Pg.68]

In patients with Type II diabetes the sulfonylureas can provide good control of blood glucose, but it remains controversial to what extend they are of benefit for the long-term prognosis and if they protect against tissue damage, e.g. microvasculopathy. Sometimes the combination of a sulfonylureas with a biguanide is indicated for adequate control. [Pg.396]

Having established the primary role of antipsychotics, evidence indicates that psychosocial therapies, when administered with these agents, improve long-term prognosis. Because chronically psychotic patients have difficulties with social adjustment, reason dictates that they and their families could benefit from such interventions. Regardless of theoretical orientation, it is clear that practitioners should provide psychosocial therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment strategy. [Pg.80]

From these studies, it appears that the medium- and long-term prognosis after TIA is more dependent on underlying vascular risk factors than characteristics of the event itself. [Pg.218]
