Stimulates gastric emptying and intestinal transit of barium in cases where delayed emptying interferes with radiological examination of the stomach or small intestine. Unlabeled uses Used to improve lactation. Doses of 30 to 45 mg/day have increased milk secretion, possibly by elevating serum prolactin levels (see Warnings). Also for treatment of postoperative gastric bezoars (10 mg 3 or 4 times daily). [Pg.1391]

Bezoars (ingested compaction that does not pass into intestine) have been reported in patients treated with sucralfate. [Pg.1155]

Formulations that contain alginates can cause gastric bezoars, as can tube-feed thickening when antacids are added (11). [Pg.243]

Esophageal obstruction by a bezoar after ingestion of psyllium has been reported (4). [Pg.2009]

A 69-year-old man with Parkinson s disease developed severe dysphagia after taking granules of the bulk laxative Perdiem (82% psyllium and 18% senna formulated as granules). Disimpaction of the bezoar was performed via a rigid endoscope under general anaesthesia. [Pg.2009]

Modified-release formulations of nifedipine have been associated in case reports with the formation of bezoars, concretions of undigested material within the gastrointestinal tract, mostly in the stomach. An unusual case of tablet impaction in the duodenum, with gastric outlet obstruction, was discovered 1 year after the patient stopped taking a modified-release formulation of nifedipine (27). [Pg.2518]

The absorption of normal doses of regular aspirin from the GI tract is generally rapid, with peak serum concentration achieved within 2 hours. This peak value may be delayed for 12 hours or longer for enteric-coated or slow-release formulations. Moreover, toxic doses of aspirin may form concretions or bezoars and produce pylorospasm, thereby delaying absorption. Serum salicylate in such instances may not reach maximum concentration for 6 hours or longer, an important consideration when the assessment of the severity of toxicity is based on such measurements. [Pg.1306]

Sucralfate therefore should be taken at least 2 hours after the administration of other drugs. The sticky nature of the viscous gel produced by sucralfate in the stomach also may lead to the formation of bezoars in some patients, particularly in those with underlying gastroparesis. [Pg.627]
