The vulcanization accelerators include the thiazole 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) (169), and its derivative benzothiazole disulfide (dibenzoythiazyl disulfide, 2,2 -dithiobis (benzothiazole), MBTS) (170). Organic accelerators enable reduction in time of vulcanization, more effective use of sulfur in formation of cross-links and use of low processing temperatures. MBTS delays vulcanization, when compared with MBT alone. They are used in production of conveyor belts, footware, etc. The 2-mercaptobenzothiazole zinc salt (MBTZ) (171) is also important, and is used in latex products. Properties of zinc salts of inorganic and organic salts are Hsted in Table 1 with other commercially important zinc chemicals. In the dithiocarbamates, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and formaldehyde sulfoxylate, zinc is covalendy bound to sulfur. Thiazoles are derivatives of benzothiazole compounded with sulfenamides. The benzothiazoles include 2-MBT, dibenzothiazyl disulfide (MBTS) and the zinc salt of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (ZMBT). The sulfenamides are principally N-tert-butyl-2-benzothiazyl sulfenamide (TBBS), N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl sul-fenamide (CBS) and morpholinylmercaptobenzo-thiazole (MOR). MBT, MBTS and CBS are the more widely used. Because of their strong capacity to sensitize, thiazoles are less frequently used in gloves than are the thiurams.
