The concentration of is determined by measurement of the specific P-activity. Usually, the carbon from the sample is converted into a gas, eg, carbon dioxide, methane, or acetylene, and introduced into a gas-proportional counter. Alternatively, Hquid-scintiHation counting is used after a benzene synthesis. The limit of the technique, ca 50,000 yr, is determined largely by the signal to background ratio and counting statistics.

Although the Berthelot benzene synthesis must obviously be a multi-step process, its detailed mechanism surprisingly remains unknown to the present day. Being interested in the actual ring-producing step (see below), several years ago we postulated [4] that the overall process might be initiated by the isomerization of 1 to vinylidene carbene (3), a reaction that has been studied in detail by Brown and co-workers (Scheme 2) [5] ...

Benzene serves well in this capacity as a scintillation solvent and is used by many dating laboratories. The accuracy of each method is comparable whereas the precision of the benzene synthesis method appears to be slightly superior. The major differences in the two methods is in equipment. The benzene synthesis method uses commercially available hardware whereas the direct aqueous counting method uses an experimental large-volume counter. 

The overwhelming majority of template reactions carried out to date have been stoichiometric. However, many catalytic processes are known which have been realised by the template approach. The classic example of a template catalytic process is Reppe s cyclooctatetraene and benzene synthesis, in which a nickel atom brings together four and three acetylene molecules, respectively, prior to cyclo-tetra(tri)merisation (Eq. 1.23) [34].
