Bell head

The bell head (or floating-head cover) is dropped. [Pg.241]

The reason illustrates the true nature of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger. It is a compromise between an ideal heat-transfer configuration and practical mechanical limitations. In this case, the difficulty is preventing leakage around the longitudinal baffle. Such leaks permit the shell-side fluid to short-circuit the tube bundle that is, a percentage of the inlet flow, may flow directly to the outlet nozzle. In extremely serious cases, I have seen the bell head (shown in Fig. 19.8) 100°F colder than the shell-side outlet temperature. [Pg.244]

Rig Practice. All drilling fluids should be contained in the mud pits or reserve pit. The cellar should have a conduit linking it to the reserve pit such that accumulation of mud from connections does not spread over the location. In the case of toxic mud, a bell should be located beneath the rotary table to direct such fluids back into the drilling nipple or into the mud pit in the case of a rotating head. The use of a mud bucket is also recommended in situations where the pipe can not be shook dry. [Pg.1353]

Riveted to Belle Bete s breastplate, set on his nearside and angled to catch a horse in the opposing part of the chest if they met head-on, was a sturdy steel spike. [Pg.128]

I suggested that Farben men might have cleaned out the safe in a hurry, leaving that one file by mistake. The other records might have been destroyed before the Russians got there. Belle shook her head. [Pg.39]

Bells began to ring in my head I had seen REM sleep without atonia before. It was in Michel Jouvet s lab in the early 1960s, when he and his team were trying to selectively damage the locus coeruleus, which, they mistakenly believed, actively commanded REM. This meant that my neurosurgeon patient probably had a disease process affecting his brain stem, a possibility that had already been raised by his earlier symptoms of sleeplessness and difficulty with balance and coordination. [Pg.173]

The paper discusses suction-intake design, suction-bell submergence, air-entrainment potential, and net positive suction head of cooling towers. Guidelines on possible problems and ways to assure reliable operation of cooling towers are given. [Pg.263]

Let me illustrate the effect of at least one of these losses by first describing the role of acetylcholine in the cortex of a normal brain (yours). Imagine that, using an electroencephalogram or EEG, I have attached some electrodes to the front half of your head to record the electrical activity occurring inside your brain. Next, I calmly inform you that as soon as I ring a bell (at the point in time shown by the number i in Fig. 2—2) a... [Pg.26]
