Polymers used for seat and plug seals and internal static seals include PTFE (polytetrafluoroethjlene) and other fluorocarbons, polyethylene, nylon, polyether-ether-ketone, and acetal. Fluorocarbons are often carbon- or glass-filled to improve mechanical properties and heat resistance. Temperature and chemical compatibility with the process fluid are the key selection criteria. Polymer-lined bearings and guides are used to decrease friction, which lessens dead band and reduces actuator force requirements. See Sec. 25, Materials of Construction, for properties. 

An inherent valve flow characteristic is defined as the relationship between flow rate and travel, under constant-pressure conditions. Since the rightmost two terms in Eq. (8-121) are zero in this case, the inherent characteristic is necessarily also the relationship between flow coefficient and travel. 

Rotary stem-valve designs are normally offered only in their naturally occurring characteristic, since it is difficult to appreciably alter this. If additional characterization is required, the positioner or controller may be characterized. However, these approaches are less direct, since it is possible for device nonlinearity and dynamics to distort the compensation.

As most throttling control valves are still operated by pneumatic actuators, the control valve device descriptions that follow relate primarily to devices that are used with pneumatic actuators. The functions of hydraulic and electrical counterparts are very similar. Specific details on a particular valve control device are available from the vendor of the device.

The use of a stethoscope will help to give an early warning of defective bearings and inefficient steam traps. The judicious installation of manometers can indicate when the efficiency of extraction systems or filters has fallen off and help in advancing the cleaning of the respective duct systems, or replacement of filter packs. 

The Zero-Energy Reactor, Dimple, which was used at Harwell until late 1960, has been extensively modified and rebuilt at Winfirth. Dimple can now be used to study the physics of reactor systems moderated by light or heavy water or by an organic moderator. Containment and monitoring equipment have been provided to permit the use of plutonium-bearing fuels. A wide variety of coarse structures can be built into Dimple ranging from large pressure tube systems to small close packed systems moderated with H2O or H2O/D2O mixtures, which are of interest in the field of marine propulsion. The reactor may be heated uniformly to about 90°C.

The system or procedure pack must not bear additional CE marking and must be accompanied by the original manufacturers information. The declaration must be kept for 5 years. 

Where the above conditions are not met, as in cases where the system or procedure pack incorporates devices that do not bear CE marking or where the chosen combination of devices is not compatible in view of their original intended use, the system or procedure pack must be treated as a device in its own right and the appropriate conformity assessment procedure must be followed. 

Computer systems are used worldwide in the pharmaceutical industry and have direct bearing on product quality. The purpose of validation is to demonstrate that the intended product manufactured, packed, or distributed using a computerized controlled system will meet the safety, efficacy, and potency requirements per the individual monograph.
