Parthenin (19) has at a concentration of 50 ppm no effect on the germination of the bean Phaseolus vulgaris but inhibits the development of radicles and hypocotyls (41). Similar effects were observed by Kanchan for Parthenlum hysteropherus and Eleusine coracana coleoptiles (42) and it was shown that besides parthenin (19), caffeic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid an3 anisic acid were major constituents in P. hysteropherus (43).

Experiments with gaseous acetic acid have been performed for disinfection of seeds intended for the production of bean sprouts (Delaquis et al., 1999). Salmonella typhimurium and E. coli 0157 H7 were eradicated from the surface of mung bean seeds and it was reported that the seed germination loss was not too large. The seeds have often been the suspected source of contamination in sprout-associated outbreaks and sanitation methods that do not interfere with the germination of the seeds are appreciated. Other volatile chemical treatments have been tested for lethality to Salmonella spp. on alfalfa seeds and sprouts with varying results both on the efficacy of the disinfectant and its effect on sensory qualities (Weissinger et al., 2001). 

Although it is evident from the above discussion that the fatty acids present in the usual vegetable or animal fats do not contribute to the carbohydrate stores in the animal body, there is ample proof that such may be the case in plants and lower organisms. This change has been confirmed in the castor bean where the R. Q. has been found to vary from 0.30 to 0.58 during the period of germination.1660 This could be correlated with the disappearance of fat and the formation of carbohydrate.167 There also seems to be evidence that silk worms are able to build carbohydrate at the expense of fat.168...
